IIT Madras has designed an Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology by which the brain signals of speech-impaired persons can be transformed into Language. Not only will this help speech-impaired people, but it can be implemented in decoding nature's signals such as the process of photosynthesis or their response to any outer stimulus. Dr. Vishal Nandigana, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras spearheaded the innovation along with his team of IIT Madras students.

Explaining in detail, Dr. Nandigana - the lead researcher stated that the output result was the ionic current. The current symbolises the movement of ions which are charged particles. To be interpreted as human language meaning speech, these electrically driven ionic current signals are worked on. This would tell what the ions were trying to convey. When they succeed with their effort, they would have electrophysiological data from the neurologists to access brain signals of speech impaired humans to know what they are trying to communicate.

The researchers are trying to know how these real data signals could be interpreted into a human language such as the English language. They are also trying to know if the real data signal could be decoded as a simple human language that could be deciphered by all human beings. Brains signal are patterns looking like wave having humps, crusts and spikes. These can be transformed into simple human language that is a speech by means of Deep Learning algorithms and Artificial Intelligence. This provided access to the researchers to read direct electrical signals of the brain.
