How my college shaped my personality: Gulshan Shah

It is my pleasure and I thank Shiksha for giving me this opportunity to write for them and enlighten the students.

I would like to start from the phase which is important in each and every student’s career and that is class XI-XII. I would say I was a good enough student and like every student, I also wanted to score good marks in class X examination and give myself a chance to choose proper career-oriented subjects. I got good marks in Board exams. And like every student who gets good marks, I also opted for science as I always wanted to be a doctor who would help poor people suffering from diseases. But after I chose it, I realized the subject Biology was not my cup of tea. After a month of classes, we had the option of changing our subjects. I changed my subjects and went with the combination of PCM.

After my class XII results, which were good, I was searching and checking out my career-shaping opportunities and ended up taking BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE). I would say this was not my best decision but, also not the worst. I wanted to take up CSE but as we say, you can only control what is in your hand and not what is in the destiny. So I convinced myself to take it up and move forward. For every student out there thinking about their career options, I would like to ask you to be well prepared. If you want to do something, just go for it. I know some people say they have plan A and B but what I would say is, I have only one way and one goal and just put all your efforts and hard work into it. If it pays off, it will be the best decision of your life.

I would like to share the process of getting admission into my college. I was filling up forms and giving examinations here and there. I also gave this famous entrance test JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination) and, mind you, this examination is only for engineering aspirants. I did not take any coaching classes for this. The preparation was simple. I used to study at my house daily while referring to different books, as I believed that if you are motivated enough, you can prepare by yourself at home and not need any coaching classes, which is a waste as far as I think. After this test, I waited for the result and finally, on the last day of college admissions, I took my admission. It was quite scary, I would say. Never ever wait for the last moment. It may screw up all your plans. Also, I would add that the students should keep in check all the examinations and dates as in today's time, everything is online and all you need is to take time and keep a check about the things you want to do.

Now, coming to my college life, I had this horrible first day at college and for some very weird reasons, which I don't know why it happened. I cried a lot for two to three days before my first day in the college. Maybe I was quite emotional about leaving class XII and moving to college life. The first few days at college were like hiccups for me but after a while, everything went smoothly and now, here I am, studying in the third year. Those days passed very quickly. When I look back, I realize that a good two years can do a lot to a person. In these two years of BTech in Electronics and Communication Engineering, I learned a lot about myself and my abilities. This course can be very helpful for the students who want to be in the technology field. They can think of taking up this course. All in all, I would like to say whatever you do, just give it all your efforts. They say you may not be proud of your result but you can always be proud of the efforts you put in.
