Why I chose my college & how it helped me: Sabhani Prince Ghanshyambhai
I scored 88.5% in the 10th standard from Gujarat Board, with 99 marks in mathematics. I wanted to take admission in the biology group which was suggested by my father. But my mathematics teacher and principal told me that since I had good marks in mathematics, opting for the science field and later on taking admission in an engineering college was the way to go. After some thought, I agreed with the latter two, and took admission in Sahjanand School, which was a very famous and popular school in our area. This was the kick start for me in the engineering field.
In school, all the faculty members were very good and their teaching techniques were so simple that every student could learn easily. Every time, they encouraged students to get good marks in board examinations. I got 95% and was ranked 1st in my school. My choice for further studies was LD College of Engineering because it was a reputed government college. My family’s financial condition was not that great, so I chose a government college instead of a private one. I have to tell you all that people would always think that in a government college, the teaching would be poor and students might have to learn on their own, but I am telling you that is not the case. The quality and methods are both good at a government college. I took admission in Electronics and Communication branch of engineering. I chose this course because of my interest in both hardware and software. I didn’t like coding, though.
How I cracked college admission
For getting admission in LD College of Engineering, there is one common entrance exam for all students, and it’s JEE (Joint Entrance Exam). So, on the basis of Gujarat Board marks and JEE marks, a merit rank is given and by that merit rank, you can get admission in the college. The whole process is done online by ACPC (Admission Committee for Professional Courses). That’s how I did it.
As I have told you earlier, for getting admission in this engineering college, all student must crack this exam (JEE). So I gave only one entrance exam and that was JEE, but I got less marks because of my unpreparedness of writing a lengthy paper like that one, and a portion of mathematics was left unsolved because of the time limit.
I didn’t take any coaching class for preparation of that exam. The reason behind it is that our school was a day care school and I had no extra time for classes or for other activities, so I prepared for that exam by myself.
After class 11th education, I started preparing for the entrance exam during my free time. Whenever I was free or I had no work, I prepared for it and after class 12th board exams, we had only 15 days for preparation. So, I tried my best for preparation in those days. But one problem was that JEE was taken over by the CBSE board, and I studied in Gujarat board, so the course for the exam was very different from what was taught here. But I prepared with new formulae and rules from my faculty members, and in 15 days they taught me a small portion of it because they could give only so much of their time.
I want to advise all students that if you want to take admission in a good college, then you have to give your best during exam preparation because the ratio of the entrance exam marks to board marks is 40:60, so if you get good marks in the entrance exam, then your chances to get admission in the best college are more than other students, if they get lower marks than you. Another thing is that your first priority should be a government college, but if you aren’t eligible for it, then you can go for a private college.
Mistakes & Learnings
I did make mistakes during the JEE paper, because my teacher told me to attempt the mathematics portion first and then the others, but I did the reverse, so I think that was a major mistake. However, after that, I learned many things by following the instructions of faculty members and being sincere with them. Now, I look back and think that if I had followed their advice, I might have ended with an admission in IITs or NITs. So, never make this mistake.
My college life: classes, extra-curricular activities and more
In one word my college life was – awesome, because in our college, there is no burden of studies, so we feel free during the extra time whereas in other colleges, it is like a school so that students don’t get bored in the college. In our college, we organise many technical festivals, so students get the opportunity to represent themselves in front of people, and people get to know about their talent. Talented students do exist here, so if you have any query, you can ask them and they are happy to solve your problem. Faculty members and seniors are also very good. They are also enthusiastic about the tech-fest and the students’ creativity. In LD College of Engineering, there are many clubs which are run by students, and you can also gain your management or technical skills by joining these clubs. It is an amazing experience being a student of LD College of Engineering.
I am studying in the 3rd year of my bachelor’s course. I am not placed anywhere yet, but I have learnt many things from my colleagues and seniors who are my friends. They have told me that you need to be punctual and sincere in your job field, and dedicated to your company and your work. Then and only then, you will be successful in your field.
How my college helped me select my career
I feel that I chose the right career for me because in my field, there are many options to get a job and via my performance and experience, I can get job in any field. So, I am really happy with what I chose. Sometimes, what happens is that after completing 2 years or 3 years in the college, you realise that the field you chose is not the best for you. We sometimes choose a field without prior research about what would the options would be after 4 years and what are the opportunities in the said field. We do not know about them and we take admission, and after 4 years, we regret. So, please choose the field in which you have interest, and not as per your friends’ interests. Otherwise, you cannot get a job as per your expectation.
I think my college education is helping me 60% in my career because nowadays, a company does not select the person who scored 90% or 95%, but they want people with experience in their field because after 4 years, some students do not have the knowledge about the current market scenario and they are rejected by the company. The college gives us knowledge of the field but not practical knowledge, so that problem arises too. If you don’t want to get rejected by the company, then you have to do an internship so that you can get an experience of your field.
Tips on Career Selection
I think the advice given by my family and faculty led me to this position, otherwise, I don’t think I would be here. So, I want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart. Some tips on career selection are as follows:
- Find which field you have an actual interest in and discuss with your family about it, so at the time of admission, it is helpful enough with no regrets.
- Please don’t take admission blindly or in the direction of the flow; you are different from others, so you have to choose your own path and not what others take.
- Be calm when you are taking a decision about your career or about your life, because one wrong step is going to hit you hard. Don’t take any decision in a hurry, take your time and then think calmly about what would happen if you chose those options. This way, you can be successful in your field.
- Think about instructions given by your family and faculty because they are not wrong every time, and it is not the right age to take all decisions by yourself.
- Though everyone lives in a technology-centric environment, don’t be addicted to mobile phones, YouTube or any other things. Use them wisely and whenever you need them, but set a limit. Otherwise, you may not be successful.
- Believe in God. Faith is important because it gives you the required morale to do work.
- Make a time-table and follow it. This helps you more than anything else, especially during entrance exam preparations.
