Making my choice between medical and programming: Vibavari

3 mins readUpdated on Feb 26, 2019 12:37 IST

I’ve always loved studying about the human body and helping people. Right till I was filling the application forms, I wanted to go for the medical field. I had researched about all the colleges. I had even decided I wanted to get into cardiology right since 8th but when I started filling the application form, I started having second thoughts. I loved both programming and Biology, and in the school that I was applying to, I could either take Biology or Computers. It was a tough choice but I made it. I asked myself, “Will I regret if I don’t study programming further on?” The answer was yes, so I chose Computers over Biology and submitted the form. Since then, I’ve been preparing for engineering. Choosing Computer Engineering was my only choice and option. I chose engineering because I liked programming, so choosing a course other than Computer Engineering was not an option for me. Cummins College of Engineering for Women, Pune is a college highly reputed for its faculty, talent in students, and placements. I knew a lot of seniors who already studied in the same college and I could see the improvement in their personality and goals. So I chose to include Cummins College as one of my top priorities while choosing my college.

I made the mistake of joining both a coaching class and a school with compulsory attendance for 11th and 12th. Nowadays, the popularity of coaching classes is increasing, so students neglect going to a proper school in 11th and 12th and take admission in colleges where attendance is not compulsory. In my opinion, if you have good time management skills, you will manage both together. But for me, time management became a big issue in 11th and 12th. My time management skills at that time were so poor that I could neither study for the entrance exams nor for my CBSE boards. By the mid of 12th, I had zero knowledge on any topic, so I decided to drop out of coaching classes and do self-study instead. I studied really well for my boards and topped in school but it was very late to start with JEE syllabus. I gave all the entrance exams I could and studied hard in the end. I appeared for MHTCET, COMEDK, SRMJEEE, VITEEE, BITSAT, and JEE. I got a lot of top colleges in Bangalore through COMEDK, but I got into Cummins College of Engineering for Women, Pune through MHTCET in the end.

College life is heaven. The first thing I realized in college was that whatever you’ve done before, wherever you’ve come from, whatever achievements you’ve had before, nothing matters here. You start afresh. Everyone is intelligent, everyone has achieved the very same things, and everyone is equal. You need to do everything you can to set yourself ahead of those around you. And trust me, that’s a tough job when there are 600 students with the same capabilities and knowledge as you. Classes go on weekdays till 4 and we have holidays on Saturdays. Lectures are fun and the faculty is amazing. There are a lot of clubs and student societies in Cummins like Robocon, BAJA, Society of Women Engineering, Dance Club, Drama Club, Code Club and the list goes on long. Even if you’re a part of a single club, it will keep you busy for the entire evening. Some teams like Robocon and BAJA are active and work year-round but many others require you to come only when there is an event. Sports is given a lot of importance in our college and we achieve quite a lot on the sports front. I am a part of the Robocon team which is active in making robots for an international competition ROBOCON. I also take part in volunteer work organized by many groups in the college. I would love to join classes for some sport and language classes though. The college is a wonderful place and it is changing me beautifully. I’ve become more responsible, time management has become a piece of cake, and the competitive nature obviously seeps in when you’re in a good college. Students are trained mentally right from the start so that they get good placements. This has brought in a lot of maturity. This is just the first year. I’d love to see what all I can achieve in the next 4 years in this amazing college.
