DU defers decision to resume physical classes of Science courses
Delhi University has gone back on its decision to resume physical classes for Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) Science subjects.
Within a day of issuing the order to resume offline classes for Science courses, Delhi University (DU) has taken a u-turn and deferred the decision. On August 5, DU issued an order to resume physical classes for Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) Science subjects.
As per the revised order issued by the University of Delhi Registrar, the instruction issued for the conduct of classes for the UG and PG programme in respect of Science courses from August 16, has been deferred.
Earlier, Shiksha reported various concerns raised by teachers and students of the university, as the second wave of COVID-19 is yet to get over.
Over DU decision to defer physical classes, Abha Dev Habib, Treasurer, Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) said: βIt is good that the University has reviewed its decision because of responses received. The sudden notification regarding classes and lab in the physical mode for science PG and UG course had resulted in immense panic.β
She added that as the vaccination for 18+ has just started in the country, the university should give time for students to complete their dose. Teaching in overcrowded rooms and labs would have meant a health hazard for all. Many DU teachers and non-teaching, who fell ill during the second wave, are taking first dose of vaccination now.
Though physical classes have been deferred but teaching and non-teaching staff of DU colleges and other centres will have to report to work, as stated in the order issued on August 5.
βWe all are waiting for normalcy to be restored. As teachers we are worried about the dilution online teaching and examination has caused. However, the University needs to bring a well-thought-of plan. Reopening cannot be a rushed exercise,β Habib added.
