Mystory@Gouri Chandran: How I chose my course and college

Mystory@Gouri Chandran

We all have our favourite subjects and teachers during our school days. For me, my favourite subject was English, and my favourite teacher was my English teacher. My teacher was so supportive and encouraging that in no time English turned out to be my favourite subject. This is why I chose English as my subject for UG. After graduation, I shifted my studies to an entirely different field, that was, Journalism and Mass Communication. It was not hard as most people think it to be. Most of us assume Journalism and Mass Communication to be only about news reporting, but it is not so. There is much more scope of study under it. My interest to work in a team of an event management company or a mass media production inspired me to choose Journalism and Mass Communication.

How I cracked college admission

When it was time to choose a college, it was yet another rough ride, but the key was to apply everywhere. Out of the colleges where I had applied, a few were The English and Foreign Languages University (EFLU) Hyderabad, and Central Institute of English and Foreign Languages (CIEFL). I had also applied for the same under the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET), and I got enrolled in a University in Tamil Nadu. Later, I got selected at EFLU, but there were only twenty seats in Journalism and Mass Communication. I did not think of any other option.

If you can present yourself confidently with very basic knowledge in the subject, Personal Interview is not a hard nut to crack.

The entrance here was followed by an interview. With basic skills in aptitude and good control over English, cracking the entrance exam was easy. Then came time for interview, which also turned out to be easy. If you can present yourself confidently with very basic knowledge in the subject, it is not a hard nut to crack. I often think would have I done anything differently, if I had the chance to? I don’t think so because being able to study in this University now gives me no thought of doing anything differently.

What I gained from my college experience

College days in UG were entirely different from those spent in PG. In UG days, the best part was making friends. More than curricular activities, most of the time was spent with friends. One of the faculty in my UG days helped me discover my passion in event management and helped me develop it because of which I gained confidence in organising events in my PG days. The college tours were the best part in UG where we as a class became much closer. PG days are entirely different. The departmental fest being organised by our batch as a part of our Public Relations course, gave a lot of exposure into organising events as well as meeting new people. The joy that I experienced when an event organised by me was appreciated by others was boundless. It helped me be in the team of other cultural events. The faculty here is also very supportive when it comes to choosing career and applying for jobs and internships. Hostel life is also unforgettable. Our hostel is great in all terms, be it the official staff or assistance of other members, all are very friendly. Late night chats with friends, walking around in the campus, all has certainly made my PG days indeed a memorable experience. I am perfectly happy with the way I have spent my UG and PG days be it with friends or participating in extra-curricular activities. I can never think of spending it in a better way.
