Internships provide the much-needed boost to a student’s resume apart from harnessing their classroom learning through exposure to real-world situations. Ritika Pandey in this article emphasizes on the importance of internships in the field of Journalism and Mass Media.

Many students wonder if there is a compulsion of taking up internship during the course or academic sessions. In any course or academic program, an internship is a major push to step ahead with your desired field while also making it your area of expertise. Apart from being a mandatory part of the course curriculum in many colleges, internships also play an important role in the growth of your career. Internships provide a platform for students to acquire practical knowledge and hands-on experience in their respective fields, besides getting an insight into the kind of outcomes they can expect from their career preferences.

My college Manipal University, Jaipur has also made it mandatory to complete an internship of minimum 45 days duration for students in BJMC programme. The certificate obtained after internship completion is proof of practical exposure and operational experience in the respective field. Moreover, internship in any area or course exposes students various skills and experiences depending on their interests. Internships in different roles such as content writer, reporter, photographer, video editor, assistant director, etc. allow the students to learn the required skills in their fields more closely.

Internships are a great platform for students to start earning also while learning! Internships these days offer stipends and incentives to hard-working and dedicated students. This has encouraged more and more students to start working alongside completing their graduation years. However, balancing graduation and internship together is also a tough task and students need to manage their time efficiently. Sometimes, it becomes hectic for students to manage both of them but with efficiency and dedication, nothing is impossible.

Internships are not an essential part of pursuing higher education. Yet, it presents a good opportunity for students to learn and gain practical insight before advancing further in the same field. Opportunities offered during internships are not just great from the perspective of learning but they can be also crucial for final placements. Internships also assist students in finding placement opportunities at top firms and media houses. While some colleges offer a variety of opportunities for the media students to explore various career opportunities, other colleges restrict this movement towards media platforms only.

With the newly acquired practical knowledge, a student out-grows the opportunities to make their place in top companies. Internships aid students to build a strong CV while the hands-on experience acquired during internship can help them get through the group discussion (GD) or Interview with ease. Moreover, internships and project experience on CV are captivating for interviewers during the final round and can often be the difference in your selection.
