Once the result of IIFT 2018 was declared, Abhishek Sagar, one of the IIFT test-takers, had a strong determination to secure a seat in the top B-School. Having scored 98.47 in the entrance test, Abhishek received a call from IIFT, and he knew he had to give in his best in the GD-WAT-PI rounds.

To help other aspirants prepare for the upcoming GD-PI-WAT of other B-Schools, Abhishek Sagar shares his GD-WAT-PI experience with Shiksha.

Date: February 24, 2018

WAT Topic: Swachh Bharat

It was a relatively easy topic. I wrote pretty well about the Government schemes being implemented such as different color bins for different types of waste, setting up of toilets in rural areas. Apart from these, I also quoted example of recent movies and budget 2018.

GD Topic: Is today's youth becoming more self-centered?

I pitched in 3-4 points about nuclear family, effect of both the parents’ working day and night resulting in isolation of kids, etc. (I believe I did fairly well here.)

Next was the Personal Interview round. There were three interviewers, M1, M2 and F1. M2 was from South India I guess, and was pretty cool throughout the interview. M1 was comparatively stern and F1 was decent too.

I went inside the room where the interviews were being conducted, and greeted all of them. They asked me to put my folder aside.

F1: So where does your father work as a controller of examination? Which University?

Me: (I was a little surprised at this question) Ma'am, in MJP Rohilkhand University, Bareilly

M1: Okay Abhishek! Tell me what exactly you do in Instrumentation and Control Engineering?

Me: Told in detail about the various control systems processes and the instruments used to measure different variables and where they're used.

M1: Give an example of Instrumentation in agriculture sector.

Me: Told about driverless thresher that can be employed through which we can initially feed the amount of area to be sowed and speed of the cutter etc. so that it can reduce human workload.

M1: Have you heard of artificial intelligence? Tell me the difference between AI and a simple machine?

Me: Told in layman’s terms.

M1: Have you heard about IOT?

Me: I've heard about it Sir, but don't know the details. (I didn’t know anything about IOT)

F1: Where do you see yourself in 5 years or more, say 15 years down the line?

Me: Explained about my interest in the event management sector and my future plans of starting a venture in the same.

M1: How do you think your graduation field would help you in achieving your long term goals?

Me: I talked about the analysis that we conduct which can come handy in any management sector. Apart from that, I also talked about risk management which we consider before undertaking any project.

(They somehow got convinced with what I told them.)

M1 finally thought of taking a breather, and passed the ball to M2 who was quiet until now and was observing the form that I had filled)

M2: You've taken up several projects and have made plenty of models etc. and doing well in your field. Why do you want to change your path?

Me: Told about how I enjoyed the managing part more than the technical part of those activities.

M2: Okay. Tell me some practical approaches of instrumentation and control, like what fields is it used in?

Me: (I was expecting this question) Spoke in detail about the automation sector including power plants, wireless technology, Metro systems, etc.

M2: What are your hobbies?

Me: Playing badminton is my primary hobby Sir.

(No questions were asked at all related to this)

M2 looked at others if they want to ask anything else. They thanked me. I thanked in return and left the room.
