All the five sections of CMAT question paper has equal weightage of 20 questions. Each question carries four marks for correct attempt. One mark is deducted per incorrect entry. There is no marks deduction for unanswered question. Therefore, each section of CMAT will have equal weightage of 80 marks. Given below is the sectional weightage of CMAT exam. 1. English Comprehension: 20 questions, 80 marks 2. General Knowledge: 20 questions, 80 marks 3. Quantitative Techniques and Data Interpretation: 20 questions, 80 marks 4. Data Interpretation and Reasoning: 20 questions, 80 marks 5. Innovation and Entrepreneurship: 20 questions, 80 marks Since, all the sections of CMAT have same weightage, it is important for candidates to prepare for each section well. If you will score equally will in every section, only then will your overall score will be good. Also, many colleges consider sectional scores as well for admission shortlist so it is important to perform equally well in all sections of CMAT.

Q:   Which is the lengthiest section in CMAT?

A:
Since the Language Comprehension section of CMAT includes reading comprehension passages, it can be considered a lengthy section. However, there is a possibility of any other section to be lengthier. For example, Logical Reasoning questions or Data Interpretation questions can also be lengthy, due to multiple levels of calculations. The weightage of each section is same in CMAT I. e. 20 questions and 80 marks, so it doesn't really matter which section is lengthy as candidates have to meet sectional cut offs to be able to get a good overall score. It is not mandatory to solve all 100 questions in CMAT so candidates have the choice of dropping lengthy questions and solving easier questions. So, the best option is to skip the lengthy questions and solve other questions correctly. Doing so will ensure that the candidate doesn't fall short of time as well as good questions to solve.

Q:   How can I prepare for CMAT to secure 100 percentile?

A:

Common Management Admission Test is an online computer based test conducted by the National Testing Agency, India. It is a national-level admission test for facilitating institutions to select suitable students for admission in all management programmes approved by AICTE. According to the exam pattern, the CMAT syllabus for MBA admission is divided into five sections namely, Quantitative Technique and Data Interpretation, Language Comprehension, Logical Reasoning, General Awareness, and Innovation and Entrepreneurship. If you plan to prepare for CMAT exam, then you have to at least put in four to six hours daily into studying. 345 to 350 marks are expected to secure the 100 percentile and those securing in the range of 285 to 340 marks will obtain 99 to 99.99 percentile. CMAT merit list will include names of all the aspirants scoring CMAT score vs percentile from 0.005 to 100 percentile. Speed is not an issue at all as you have ample time available. Solving 100 questions in 3 hours is quite easy; hence time is not as important as accuracy is. I have slept for 20 to 40 minutes after completing test every year! The range of topics covered has become very important.

Q:   What is the difficulty level of CMAT exam?

A:
CMAT is one of the easier MBA entrance exams. Despite having an extra section, the overall difficulty level of CMAT exam is generally moderate. However, it has been seen previously that some questions in Logical Reasoning and General Awareness sections of CMAT turn out to be more difficult than questions of Quantitative Techniques, Language Comprehension and Innovation and Entrepreneurship. If a candidate can solve about 70-75 of the total questions with about 80 per cent accuracy in each section, they can score well in CMAT. The sectional difficulty in CMAT is as follows: 1. Quantitative Techniques & Data Interpretation: Moderate 2. Logical Reasoning: Easy to Moderate 3. Language Comprehension: Easy to Moderate 4. General Awareness: Moderate 5. Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Moderate For the latest exam pattern and difficulty level of CMAT click here: https://www.shiksha.com/mba/cmat-exam-analysis.
Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   Is there any negative marking in CMAT?

A:

Yes, there is a negative marking in CMAT exam. For each wrong answer, 1 mark will be deducted. For example, if a candidate attempts 18 questions from Logical Reasoning and gets 15 questions correct but 3 questions incorrect. Then the candidate's score for this section will be 15x4-3, i.e. 57. However, no marks will be deducted for unanswered questions.

Thus, candidates must choose only those questions to solve which they are sure of solving accurately. It is anyway not possible to solve all 100 questions, so candidates must weigh their options viz. Strength and weak areas and then choose questions carefully.

If candidates are not sure of answering a question correctly or it is taking too much time, then they should leave that questions and move to next as they also need to keep a tab on the time limit.

CMAT Preparation 2025

For CMAT 2025 preparation, you can mainly focus on practicing sample questions and CMAT mock tests. CMAT  has the same syllabus as other MBA entrance exams, such as Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, Data Interpretation an General Awareness. It has only one extra subject - Innovation and Entrepreneurship but it can be handled with basic preparation. Also, you will have about five months to prepare as CMAT is held in May.

If you plan to appear for only CMAT 2025  and no other exam before that, then start exam preparation much earlier and cover the entire CMAT syllabus topic wise before you take a plunge into practice tests. You must follow an exam preparation plan which should include:

  • Covering CMAT syllabus
  • Practicing mock tests and sample papers
  • Revision of important topics

Here's how you should plan your CMAT preparation w.r.t. the above three main points:

1. Covering CMAT syllabus

CMAT syllabus is similar to other MBA entrance exams. It includes Verbal Ability, Reading Comprehension, Data Interpretation, Logical Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude and General Knowledge. CMAT has an additional subject called Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

Candidates must start CMAT preparation 2025 by starting with the tougher topics first. Once they are thorough with the tough topics they should move to easier topics. However, the key is to keep a balance between tough and easy topics in such a way that easy subjects don't get sidelined for tough ones. The main focus however, should be on CMAT topics from which maximum questions are asked.

For Innovation and Entrepreneurship section, refer to CMAT question papers from 2020 onwards. Now, books for this section are also available in the market. You can also look for notes and guidance in online study forums.

2. Practicing CMAT mock tests and sample papers

3. Revision of important topics

CMAT 2025 exam preparation is incomplete until the candidate has a strong hold on every topic included in the syllabus. To have a complete control, you need to constantly revise the topics and processes that you've been studying for solving various types of questions. Thus, keep aside an hour every day for revision of topics that you study on a particular day. In the last 15-20 days before the CMAT 2025 exam, dedicate maximum time on revision of the CMAT syllabus so that everything is fresh in memory on the exam day. Q:   How many mock tests to attempt to score 99 percentile in CMAT?

A:
There is no particular number of CMAT mock test that you should target to solve during your preparation phase but on an average it has been seen that about 30-40 CMAT mock tests are good enough to score 99 percentile. Candidates must start solving CMAT mock tests after completing the syllabus as it will help them gauge which are the topics that they have understood well and which are the topics that require more work. 30-34 CMAT mock tests are recommended as, CMAT exam is all about speed and accuracy. The more questions you'll solve in an exam environment, the better you'll get at understanding, choosing and solving questions faster and correctly. Important point to note about practicing CMAT mock test is that one should analyse every mock test to understand the gaps and fissures and what to do to fill them. Another aspect to keep in mind is not to overdo it. When you start to score 98-99 percentile in CMAT mock tests consistently then you should stop and focus on revision, etc.

Q:   Can I prepare for CMAT in 6 months?

A:

Yes, 6 months are a decent time duration to prepare for CMAT exam, if one does it with dedication and discipline. Candidates who have appeared for CMAT or any other MBA entrance exam before, will find 6 months more than enough to prepare for the exam. Those, who are appearing in CMAT for the first time, can also prepare in 6 months but they will have to give extra time to it. If you plan a CMAT preparation in six months, make a three stage plan. In the first stage, which will be of 3 months, complete the CMAT syllabus, in the second phase, which will be of 2 months, practice sample papers and mock tests. In the third stage, which will be of 1 months, do revision of important topics and gain control over all that you have studied before. Keep in mind to solve enough number of CMAT mock tests (30-35) for better preparation in short time. Read More: CMAT preparation in 6 months

Q:   What is the CMAT marking scheme?

A:
CMAT marking scheme is straightforward. If they can recall their attempts or have the answer key with them then they can calculate their CMAT raw score by adding and subtracting scores as per correct and incorrect attempts. Check CMAT marking scheme below: 1. For every correct attempt, 4 marks is awarded and for every incorrect answer, 1 mark is deducted. 2. For every unanswered question, the candidate will be marked zero. Given below is the process of calculating the CMAT score with the help of the CMAT answer key. Every section has 20 questions, so suppose in Quantitative Techniques section you got 14 questions right, 2 questions wrong and skipped 4 questions. So, your score will be 54 out of 80. Similarly, calculate the score of other sections. After the add all five to arrive as overall raw score. For example, you scored 54, 44, 75, 60 and 40 in five sections, then your sum total will be 203/400. Q:   Is there any difference between the CMAT score and percentile?

A:
Yes, the Common Management Admission Test score is the total marks one has scored in the exam (sum total of marks scored in the five sections basis correct and incorrect attempts), whereas the Common Management Admission Test percentile is the rank of an applicant compared to all other test takers. Common Management Admission Test Percentile Calculation: Percentile P = 100 x Number of students who appeared in the examination with raw marks equal to or less than the candidate/Total number of candidates who appeared. For example, suppose 10,000 students appeared in the Common Management Admission Test exam. And student A has got the Number 1 Rank. His Common Management Admission Test percentile score will be: 100 x 9999/10,000= 99.99 You can also calculate the rank with the below-given formula: Percentile (P)= 10,000 1 (rank)/10,000 x 100= 99.99. Common Management Admission Test Score Calculation: 1- For each correct answer, 4 marks will be allotted. 2- For each incorrect answer, a 1 mark will be deducted. 3- There is no negative marking for unanswered questions. 4- The total score will be calculated by totaling marks gained or lost in each question. 5- The Common Management Admission Test question paper carries 100 questions, equally divided into four sections. Total marks allotted in 400. For more information, you may visit the Shiksha Common Management Admission Test exam page. (https://www.shiksha.com/mba/cmat-exam). I hope this will help you.

Q:   What was the last year CMAT cutoff for PGDM?

A:
The CMAT cutoff for PGDM (Post Graduate Diploma in Management) admission varies from year to year and across different institutes. However, based on the previous year's trends, the expected CMAT cutoffs for PGDM admission are as follows: For Tier 1 and 2 institutes: The CMAT cutoff percentile for PGDM admission in Tier 1 and 2 institutes is generally in the range of 80-85 percentile. For Tier 3 and 4 institutes: The CMAT cutoff percentile for PGDM admission in Tier 3 and 4 institutes is generally in the range of 70-75 percentile.
Thumbs Up IconUpvote Thumbs Down Icon

Q:   How to calculate CMAT percentile?

A:
Since CMAT is usually conducted in two shifts, there are chances of the question paper of one shift being slightly tougher or easier in comparison to the question paper of other shift. In order to negate the possibility of any candidate having an advantage or disadvantage due to this, the exam authorities normalise the CMAT scores before percentile calculation. Once that is done, the authorities use the normalised score for percentile score calculation. CMAT percentile is basically a rank of a candidate vs the total number of candidates who appeared in the exam. Given below is the formula for calculating CMAT percentile prescribed by NTA: Formula to Calculate CMAT Percentile: If 10,000 candidates appeared in CMAT and only 1 candidate scored the highest marks (365/400). Since they have scored the highest in exam, their rank will be 1 and CMAT percentile score will be: 100 x 9999/10,000= 99.99.

Q:   Am I eligible to get admission in PGDM marketing with 66 percentile in CMAT exam (general category)?

A:
Your chances of admission to a PGDM program in marketing will depend on several factors, including the specific program and its admission criteria, as well as the number of applicants and the competition for admission. A percentile of 66 in CMAT exam in the general category is a decent score, but it may not guarantee admission to the top-ranked institutes. However, there are many good PGDM programs in marketing that you may be eligible for. To get a better idea of your chances of admission, you should check the admission criteria of the PGDM programs you are interested in. Many institutes also consider factors such as academic background, work experience, extracurricular activities, and performance in the personal interview and group discussion rounds. In addition to your CMAT percentile, you should also focus on building a strong application that highlights your strengths and achievements. This could include showcasing your academic performance, highlighting your work experience and leadership skills, and demonstrating your interest in the field of marketing. Overall, while a percentile of 66 in CMAT exam in the general category is a good score, admission to PGDM programs in marketing is competitive, and there is no guarantee of admission. It's important to research different programs, prepare a strong application, and have realistic expectations about your chances of admission.

CMAT Admission Process 2025

CMAT admission process includes Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI). The CMAT score is accepted by many popular government and private colleges in India. These institutes determine CMAT cut offs for shortlisting candidates. The B-Schools conduct GD/PI individually to select candidates for 2-year full time MBA/PGDM programmes. At many B-Schools, Essay Writing is conducted instead of Group Discussion. To participate in the admission round, CMAT qualifiers should fill the admission forms of their preferred institute on time.

MBA admission through CMAT includes three main processes:

  • Candidate shortlisting through CMAT score
  • Essay Writing/GD/PI round
  • Final selection for MBA/PGDM admission

Aspirants must note that NTA has no role in MBA admission through CMAT.
