Factors Determining CAT Cut Offs 2024

CAT cut off percentile 2024 for MBA/PGP programmes of every institute will be determined on the basis of several factors. Some of the key factors that determine IIM cut offs category wise, are mentioned below:

  • Difficulty level of the CAT exam

  • Number of aspirants who appeared for the exam

  • Number of aspirants who cleared the exam

  • Previous years' trends of CAT cut off
  • Number of seats in a particular institute

  • All India ranking of the institute

CAT cut offs never fall drastically. For example, in top rated colleges like IIMs, the cut offs have always been 99+ percentile. In colleges like SPJIMR, MDI or FMS, the cut offs have remained between 95-97 percentile. In tier 2 colleges, the CAT cut offs remain in 70-80 percentile range.

Qualifying CAT Cut Off vs Final CAT Cut Off

IIM MBA selection includes ttwo types of CAT cut offs. The first type is qualifying cut off, which is essentially the minimum percentile you need to score for being eligible for PI short list. The second type is final cut off, which is the minimum percentile on which a candidate is selected for PI round. Check below the difference between qualifying and final CAT cut offs.

Qualifying CAT cut offs

Final CAT cut offs

IIM eligibility cut off or IIM shortlist cut off, it is the minimum marks a candidate must score so that he/she is eligible for interview call (for WAT/GD-PI round) from the IIMs.

Also referred to as IIM call cut offs, it is the minimum percentile score fixed by the IIMs for selection of candidates for WAT/GD-PI round.

Meeting the qualifying cut off does not mean that the candidate will be selected for the WAT/GD-PI round.

Meeting the final CAT cut off does not mean that the candidate will be selected for admission.

The qualifying CAT cut off is fixed before the announcement of CAT result.

The final cut off is determined after the declaration of CAT result.

The qualifying CAT cut off percentiles are announced by every IIM in the notification of admission criteria and selection process for that academic year.

The final CAT cut offs are not announced officially by any IIM or even other top MBA institutes.

The qualifying CAT cut offs remain above 90 percentile for all IIMs, exception being IIM Ahmedabad whose qualifying cut off has been 85 percentile in the past few years.

The final CAT cut offs remain as high as 99.99 percentile for all top IIMs and 95+ percentile for new IIMs.

The qualifying CAT cut offs include sectional and overall cut offs.

The final CAT cut offs include sectional and overall cut offs.

The qualifying CAT cut off is fixed category wise. The cut off for General category students is high (90), while for reserved category students, it is low (70 and below).

The final CAT cut off is also fixed category wise. For General category male students with engineering background, the final cut off is high as compared to reserved category students, female students and those with non-engineering background.

CAT Cut Off 2024: Score vs Percentile

For admission to MBA courses, B-Schools consider CAT percentile, which is essentially the candidate's rank in the exam. For calculation of CAT percentile, the raw CAT score of candidates are normalised through a formula to arrive at the scaled CAT score. This is done to ensure that the candidates' performances across the exam sessions are assessed on the same scale and no one get the advantage of solving an easier test form than others. CAT percentile is calculated from scaled CAT score.

High CAT score may not convert into high percentile if a larger number of candidates have scored the same or higher. However, an estimation can be calculated based on number of test takers and difficulty level of CAT exam for that year. Check the table below to know estimated range of CAT scores vs CAT percentile (courtesy IMS India) for CAT 2024:
