IIFT preparation 2025 - The IIFT entrance exam has some unique aspects to it that the aspirants needs to pay attention to while making a preparation plan. For example, the syllabus of IIFT exam is same as CAT or XAT but the nature of questions is different. Reading Comprehension passages of IIFT exam are fact-based unlike CAT or XAT. Quantitative Aptitude questions of IIFT are often more difficult than CAT or XAT. So, while one can prepare for IIFT alongwith CAT or XAT, they need an exam specific preparation strategy to score well in the IIFT exam.

In 2024, the IIFT entrance exam was not held and candidates were selected on the basis of CAT score. For 2025, too the same admission criteria may be applied, so aspirants must do CAT preparation as well.

For a  fruitful CAT or IIFT preparation, one should devote about six to nine months to it. One can also prepare for the exam in lesser time if they plan well or have a prior experience of it. Read below for comprehensive strategy and tips for your IIFT preparation 2025.

Q:   Is IIFT easier than CAT exam?

A:
You can't exactly weigh both exams on the same scale and decide which one is easier/tougher. There are a few differences between the two exams: Mode and pattern of exam: CAT - Computer based. Calculator included. 100 questions. 3 Marks for Correct answer. -1 for wrong answer. 3 hours. 1 Hour each for 3 sections. Sectional timings exist. IIFT Paper Based. No Calculator. 100120 questions. 1 or 0.75 for a correct answer (IIFTs discretion). And for each wrong answer, 33% (of that question) marks are deducted. 4 Sections in total. 2 Hours. No sectional timings. Sectional cut-offs exist here too. Sections and what they ask from a student: I'm only going to talk about the points of difference when it comes to the three sections: VERBAL: CAT verbal predominantly has inferential questions. Doesn't test specifically on vocabulary or meaning of tough/rare words. (I. e. you don't have to by-heart the meaning of 1000 words to sit and ace CAT verbal). IIFT Verbal tests more on fact-based questions in their RCs and a lot more importance on vocabulary, when compared to CAT. DILR: CAT DILR has a logical edge to almost all its questions. Fairly rare to see a CAT DILR question that is purely computational. IIFT DILR is a lot more computation-based (as opposed to having a logical edge) and not having a calculator makes it that much harder. So pick and choose sets where you can do the computations easier. Quants: CAT Quants in CAT 16 took it to another level which might make it look as though IIFT quants is a LITTLE easier, but generally they both are of the same difficulty level. IIFT Quants is along the same lines as CAT Quants with the exception of IIFT 2016. If you have prepared well for CAT Quant, you have prepared well for IIFT Quant as well. You will get only 20 or so questions here. Try to nail as many as possible because they give most marks. IIFT also has a GK section that you have to separately prepare for. They have sectional cut-offs. The sectional cut-offs for the GK section were as low as 2 or 3 marks, but if you do not clear the cut-off, you will not get called. So do not plan to skip an entire section. Strategy for taking the exam matters just as much as preparation. So please solve the past 23 years IIFT Papers with the time constraint (2 Hours) and formulate a proper strategy.

Q:   Is IIFT tougher than CAT?

A:

Both exams are of same difficulty level. While, CAT has higher difficulty level VARC, IIFT's Quantitative Aptitude is tougher. In CAT VARC, the weightage of RC based question is higher than in IIFT. Also, the RC passages of CAT are a mix of both inference-based and fact-based types. However, the RC passages in IIFT are fact-based. IIFT focuses more on vocabulary and verbal ability than reading comprehension. Sharing key highlights of both exams here:

Q:   How many mock tests should I practice to crack IIFT with high score?

A:

Every candidate must decide on the number of mock tests according to their own ability, strengths and weaknesses viz. the IIFT syllabus. However, it is recommended that candidates must practice at least 25-30 IIFT mock tests during exam preparation to reach 99 percentile level.

The best time to start mock test practice is after completing the IIFT syllabus because if you solve mock tests without gaining control over the topics you might face difficulties in many. So, first complete the syllabus and then start mock test practice. Keep at least 2 months for IIFT mock test practice so that you can solve 25-30 mock tests in total in a gap of one day. An important aspect of mock test practice is analyzing their result. After solving every IIFT mock test, analyse your performance to see control on the topics. You will know which topics are your strong point and which require some more hard work.

Q:   Are recommended books enough to cover IIFT syllabus?

A:

No, you can’t rely only on the recommended books for IIFT syllabus coverage. You need to invest time in secondary readings and guidebooks to have a better understanding of chapters and topics. Along with books, notes and study material, you need to join online study groups where you can join video lectures for various topics of IIFT. These video lectures will help you in understanding the topics better with examples. Apart from that, to cover the IIFT syllabus, you need to practice sample papers and mock tests. These sample test papers and mocks will help you in improving your problem solving skills in limited time and help you gain knowledge of which formula to apply on which type of questions. There is no particular limit to practicing mock tests for IIFT preparation as it depends on each candidate's ability and grip on the topics. However, on an average the candidates must practice at least 25-30 IIFT mock tests and sample papers for preparation.

Q:   How many months are required to prepare for the IIFT exam?

A:

Ideally, a candidate must prepare for the IIFT exam for at least six to nine months. They must study for the exam diligently for six to eight hours every day and the daily plan should include studying a chapter, solving related sample questions and memorising formulae. The first few months should be spent in covering the IIFT syllabus. An important aspect of IIFT preparation is practicing sample questions that are based on the important topics of IIFT syllabus. After that candidates must spend about two months in solving practice questions and mock tests. In the last month before the exam, candidates must make time for revision of all the important chapters and have problem solving sessions to tie up the loose ends. In the last month, keep the focus on important topics from which maximum questions are asked.
