Launched in 2018, the Delhi government’s Mission Buniyaad aims at giving students clarity on the basics of education.
Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia visited a government school in National Capital today, June 13, 2022. Talking about the success of Mission Buniyaad, the minister said, “Today I got a chance to know about the experiences of the children involved in Mission Buniyaad by visiting Delhi Government Schools. Proud that in the last 2 months, 1 million children have become a part of Mission Buniyaad – where the learning gap of children is being bridged by working on a basic understanding of language and maths.”
The minister further added, “Every time I go to school among the children, I come with a deep resolve to provide the best education system for them. We have taken several steps to bridge the learning gap between the first and 40th child in class. Many more new suggestions emerge when talking to children and teachers.”
Launched in 2018, the Delhi government’s Mission Buniyaad aims at giving students clarity about the basics. The initiative focuses at ensuring that students of Classes 3 to 8 studying in government or MCD schools are able to fluently read letters and solve basic mathematical problems. The move came after the National Achievement Survey (NAS) found that a majority of students performed abysmally in various subjects.
Initially, the government launched it as a three-month programme, however, the COVID-19 pandemic led to the closure of schools. After a gap of two years, the schools have started the campaign again with a new aim of bridging the learning gap and helping children improve their reading, writing and basic mathematical abilities. Currently, the mission is under the second phase, which is termed as a ‘summer camp’.
Usually, schools conduct Mission Buniyaad activities and the summer camp are only for students who have been identified as being behind their grade level. However, this time it has continued through the course of summer vacations through summer camps for all students of these grades.
According to Shailendra Sharma, the principal advisor to the Director of Education, the recovery effort will continue beyond June 15, which is when summer camp ends, through a ‘dual strategy’.
For Classes 6 to 8, children who are still behind on their foundational competencies and are facing problems coping up with the current syllabus will continue to be taught under Mission Buniyaad. Children who can read ‘advanced stories’, and solve division problems will move on to a reduced syllabus.
