119 COVID cases in IIT Hyderabad, 58 in IIT Madras
Twenty-two undergraduate students, 14 postgraduate students, seven research scholars, one regular staff member and an outsourced plumber found infected with the virus at IIT Hyderabad.
As per a report published in The Times of India, as many as 119 students and staff have tested positive for COVID at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad over the past week.
A second major COVID cluster was identified at IIT Madras as 58 people, including 17 students, were found infected with the virus between January 5 and 9, 2022.
At IIT Hyderabad, 22 undergraduate students, 14 postgraduate students, seven research scholars, one regular staff member and an outsourced plumber tested positive for COVID on Tuesday.
Situation no different at other engineering institutes
There are a total of 15 COVID-19 cases at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Durgapur. The institute has asked students to vacate hostels with immediate effect following an alert from the institute’s medical unit about a surge in COVID-19 cases.
As per a notice signed by the dean of students and chief warden, “All students staying in hostels have been instructed to vacate hostels as soon as possible due to the sudden surge of COVID-19 cases on the campus. The situation will be reviewed from time to time and further decisions will be communicated to the students accordingly.”
NIT Rourkela has ordered closure of the institute on January 12 and 13 amid the rising COVID-19 cases. The institute will be closed for five days, including holidays, from January 12 to 16. The institute reported 174 positive cases till Sunday. The infected include 87 students and employees and their family members.
A total of 173 people have tested positive for COVID at NIT Hamirpur. The institute was declared a ‘mini containment zone’ on January 7 to contain the spread of the virus. Sixty-seven students at the Madras Institute of Technology, one of the four autonomous constituent colleges of Anna University, in Chromepet, Chennai, have been found infected with the COVID-19 infection. Most of the students are either asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.
More than 50 persons, including students and a faculty member, have tested positive for COVID-19 at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati since December 31, 2021. IIT Kharagpur also reported 60 COVID cases. Out of them, 40 are students and researchers.
