A medicinal chemistry scientist at the Banaras Hindu University, Dr. Nazar Hussain, has bagged a project of SERB-DST to carry out research on the cost-effective anti-diabetic drugs by new routes. The study will explore the possibilities of combining polyphenols with carbohydrates to test anti-viral activities.
According to the BHU authorities, Dr Nazar Hussain, assistant professor, department of Medicinal Chemistry, Institute of Medical Sciences, BHU will carry out the research on C-glycosides synthesis. Dr Hussain said that C-glycosides are the derivatives of carbohydrates which are widely used in the treatment of diabetes. He will get a grant of over Rs 40 lakh for his research. Along with the synthesis of anti-diabetic drugs the project also aims at synthesizing some polyphenolic C- glycosides. Polyphenolic compounds are known in the treatment of various viral infections.
The study will also explore the possibility of combining polyphenols with carbohydrates to test their anti-viral activities against different viral infections including Covid, he said adding, this will be one of the major studies of its kind in the country.

Meanwhile, BHU has decided to reopen the campus for offline classes barring first-year batches from a couple of faculties. BHU shut down all offline activity with the onset of the third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. After a meeting of Directors of Institutes, Deans of Faculties and senior officers of the university under the chairmanship of Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sudhir K. Jain, it was decided to open the campus for offline classes with some exceptions.

All the classes in the Faculty of Agriculture, Faculty of Veterinary Science, Faculty of Management Studies, and Institute of Environment and Sustainable Development will be conducted in offline mode.
