Maharashtra Schools in Palghar, Thane area shut amid red alert for heavy rains

According to the IMD forecast issued on Thursday, several places in Palghar and adjoining Thane are likely to receive 'heavy to very heavy' rainfall in over the next 48 hours.

Maharashtra Schools Shut: Amid the continuous rainfall and of a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department for very heavy rains authorities have announced that schools will remain closed on Friday and Saturday in Palghar. According to the IMD forecast issued on Thursday, several places in Palghar and adjoining Thane are likely to receive 'heavy to very heavy' rainfall in over the next 48 hours.

Palghar collector Govind Bodke released the order to shut all the schools in the concerned areas. Meanwhile, Thane collector Ashok Shingare has asked people to stay indoors in view of the rains and also directed the civic and district machinery to be fully prepared to provide relief to citizens.

Earlier, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the State Disaster Management Authority has announced a holiday for schools in Mumbai and several districts for Thursday, July 20. The BMC had declared a holiday for all primary, secondary, and higher secondary schools, from nursery to Class 12 in the Mumbai metropolis. The local administration took the step to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and staff members.

The decision was announced amid heavy rainfall and flood warnings across Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts. The local authorities took the decision in light of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warnings of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
