Schools, colleges closed amid heavy rains

Schools, and colleges closed amid Chennai rains: All schools and colleges in Tiruvallur district will remain closed amid heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu and other northern coastal regions of the state. The announcement regarding the closure is made by the Tiruvallur collector. Meanwhile, all the ministers, legislators and representatives of local bodies have received directions from Chief Minister MK Stalin to provide all necessary support to the people in rain-affected areas.

“As Northeast Monsoon is widespread in Tiruvallur district and the India Meteorological Department has issued a heavy rain warning tomorrow (30.11.2023), all schools and colleges in Tiruvallur district will be closed for the benefit of students,” the Tiruvallur collector tweeted on X official account.

A Meteorological department official said Chennai and nearby regions in northern coastal Tamil Nadu experienced heavy rainfall on Wednesday, which was in the range of 5 cm-6 cm and even above in some areas. Besides heavy traffic congestion, the intermittent heavy rains also affected neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengelpet.

A Regional Meteorological Centre bulletin here said Tuesday’s Low Pressure Area developed into a Well Marked Low-Pressure Area on November 29. The low-pressure system is over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining south Andaman Sea. The system is likely to concentrate into a depression on November 30 and later into a cyclonic storm.

Many areas in Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry are likely to experience heavy rainfall up to December 3 due to the influence of cyclonic circulation over Sri Lanka and the low-pressure system.
