IGNOU exempted from UGC's online courses regulations

By means of a Gazette Notification dated January 17, 2020, UGC, the higher education regulator has made this declaration of modifications in the University Grants Commission (Online Courses or Programmes) Regulations, 2018.

University Grants Commission (UGC) has exempted Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) from its online programmes or courses regulations 2018, as per a press release from the Delhi-headquartered Open University. By means of a Gazette Notification dated January 17, 2020, UGC, the higher education regulator has made this declaration of modifications in the University Grants Commission (Online Courses or Programmes) Regulations, 2018. These modified guidelines may be termed the University Grants Commission (Online Courses or Programmes) Amendment Regulations, 2020.

The Gazette Notification says: "In the University Grants Commission (Online Courses or Programmes) Regulations, 2018, in rule 2, in sub-regulation (2), the subsequent provision shall be put in, that is:

"Given that the University Grants Commission may, by command, relieve the Indira Gandhi National Open University, a university constituted under the Indira Gandhi National Open University Act, 1985 (50 of 1985), from the submission of these regulations, taking into consideration the purposes of the said Act". On the occasion of this vital progress, Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, Prof. Nageshwar Rao, passed on the good wishes to the IGNOU fraternity and said that it ushers a new period in the history of the university.

Moreover, he highlighted that people should be ready to make the best out of the opportunity and create learner-centric online courses for attaining knowledge and to get enabled to be future-ready. Apart from this, he emphasised that people should endeavour to become a forerunner in online education as well. The step has been hailed by the faculty members of the university.
