Jadavpur varsity student death: Murder case filed by Kolkata police

In a recent death case of a Jadavpur varsity student after he fell from the hostel's building, Kolkata Police have filed a murder case. The family of the deceased student had alleged ragging.

On Friday, a former student of the university identified as Sourabh Chowdhury was arrested in the case, police said.

Governor Ananda Bose, who is the chancellor of the state university, announced the formation of a high-level committee to study the issues and come up with suggestions to end the menace of ragging, as per a statement from Raj Bhavan.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee spoke to the victim’s family and assured all forms of assistance in the case, according to the officials, as reported by Hindustan Times.

Police have taken cognisance of JU students' social media posts, including photographs, which suggest there was an element of sexual harassment in the ragging of the deceased.

"He was definitely tormented by the boarders. There can be some passive sexual harassment. We are probing the matter," a senior police officer said. Three people have been arrested in the case so far, he said.

"A second year student of Economics hailing from Bankura town and a Sociology student from Arambagh in Hooghly district were arrested on Sunday morning. A former student of the university, who was staying at the hostel, was nabbed on Friday," he said, as reported by Telegraph India.

The police have come across a letter that supposedly the student wrote addressing the dean of the university. The letter claims that he was being threatened by his seniors about the raging culture of the university. As per the letter, a senior named Rudra allegedly intimidated the deceased student about the hostel culture that included obeying seniors and smoking weed.
