Jamia Millia Islamia begins 8th two-week online refresher course in 'Basic Sciences'

According to the official reports, the course is being organised on Google Meet and about 100 faculty members of different colleges and universities are participating in the course.

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC) and Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences started the eighth two-week Online Refresher Course in Basic Sciences (Interdisciplinary) on September 9, which will continue till September 23, 2020. According to the official reports, the course is being organised on Google Meet and about 100 faculty members of different colleges and universities are participating in the course. Professor Najma Akhtar, Vice-Chancellor, JMI was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session and renowned scientist Professor N R Jagannathan, former Head, Department of NMR and MRI Facility at AIIMS and former Vice-President of Indian National Science Academy (INSA), New Delhi were the keynote speakers.

The source reveals that the inaugural session of the course commenced with a welcome address by Professor Anisur Rahman, Director, UGC- HRDC, JMI. After receiving the warm welcome, the professor briefed about the significance of the refresher course. A brief outline of the topics and issues that will be discussed in different sessions of the refresher course was given by Professor Zubaida Ansari, Director, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research in Basic Sciences, JMI. Vice-Chancellor, Professor Najma Akhtar appreciated the efforts of the UGC-HRDC, JMI for consistently conducting a variety of training programmes in different subjects and disciplines apart from general courses for faculty and other administrative staff who come from the different universities and colleges.

Calling the course multidisciplinary in nature, Professor Akhtar stated that the interdisciplinary approach of the course is a very good option to address the contemporary challenges faced by society. She further added that JMI is amongst the few universities whose approach is interdisciplinary. There are several Centres in JMI that have complete interdisciplinary orientation and the Centre for Interdisciplinary Research is one of them.

The clinical applications of molecular and functional imaging (MRI and in-vivo MR spectroscopy) methods to understand disease biology, physiology, and metabolism were explained by the keynote speaker Professor N.R Jaganathan who has over 30 years of experience in NMR spectroscopy and MRI imaging delivered a very insightful lecture on MR imaging and MR spectroscopy in Cancer.
