According to the reports, the pre-research degree lost its attraction among students after the University Grants Commission (UGC) made PhD, NET and SLET as minimum qualifications for the appointment of faculty members in colleges and universities.

Madras University Admissions 2021: Madras University on June 25, 2021, announced the discontinuation of the MPhil degree in university departments, affiliated colleges and research institutions from 2021-22 academic year. According to the reports, the pre-research degree lost its attraction among students after the University Grants Commission (UGC) made PhD, NET and SLET as minimum qualifications for the appointment of faculty members in colleges and universities. The degree was only used as a preparatory course for a PhD degree.

Madras University registrar released an official circular to all college principals stating, "As per the decision taken by the syndicate, no admission is allowed and entertained in the MPhil programme in university departments, affiliated colleges, autonomous colleges and research institutions from 2021-22,".

Siting some relief to the already enrolled students, the circular further stated, “However, the candidates admitted during the previous academic years shall be allowed to complete their studies within the stipulated time limit prescribed by the University of Madras for the award of MPhil degree.” There are around 130 colleges under the jurisdiction of the University of Madras.

Talking about the varsity’s decision, a university official said, “The colleges with postgraduate courses used to offer MPhil courses. Following the announcement that teachers will not get a pay hike for completing an MPhil degree by Tamil Nadu government, the enrolment in the course has come down." Madras University is not the only varsity that took the decision to discontinue MPhill after UGC’s announcement. Among the state universities, Madurai Kamaraj University has already discontinued the course and Madras University is the second state university to do the same.
