Pfizer inaugurates global drug development centre at IIT Madras research park campus

The center has been set up by Pfizer at a cost of over INR 150 crore and is spread over 61,000 square feet and has 10 laboratories with cutting edge equipment.

Pfizer, a US Pharmaceutical company has developed a global drug development center on the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras research park campus. It must be noted that the campus is one of its kind facility in Asia. This is the 12 such centers opened by the pharmaceutical company in the world, where it will develop and support products in its global markets and manufacturing centers. The center has been set up by Pfizer at a cost of over INR 150 crore and is spread over 61,000 square feet and has 10 laboratories with cutting edge equipment.

In a release, the company mentioned that it will develop small molecules, innovative formulations and active pharmaceutical ingredients for global markets. “The center’s capabilities will include the development of both, APIs and finished dosage forms (FDFs) of differentiated products such as complex/value-added formulations, controlled-release dosage forms, device-combination products, lyophilized injections, powder-fill products, and ready-to-use formulations,” the release stated. 

While speaking about the new center, S Sridhar, Country Manager, Pfizer India, expressed hope that the center will be an opportunity to showcase the potential of research and development in the country. He said the center will do “research in India for the world.”

“The world-class scientific technology and innovation-driven research park campus provide an ideal setting for our work. We are hopeful that the proximity to IIT Madras and other technology research park start-ups will improve academia and industry partnerships, and encourage greater collaboration to drive innovation,” he added.

Pfizer currently has three manufacturing units in Visakhapatnam, Goa and Ahmedabad.
