The Minister announced that the semester exams have been postponed to give more time to students to prepare for exams to be conducted in offline mode.
Days after a group of students staged a protest demanding the conduct of semester exams online, Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister K Ponmudi has announced that all the exams in the engineering, arts and science colleges and polytechnics across the state has been postponed. The Minister announced that the semester exams have been postponed to give more time to students to prepare for exams to be conducted in offline mode.
The Minister announced that the semester exams will now begin only after January 20, 2022.
The announcement came soon after the higher education department, along with controllers of examinations from state universities, discussed with 11 student organisations, including the Students Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Students Federation (AISF) regarding their demands to not conduct exams in offline mode.
While speaking to reporters, the Minister said, " During the meeting, we learned that the representatives of student organisations also wanted offline mode exams. However, they wanted more time to prepare for the exams. They said students have been attending offline classes only for the last two and half months. They have asked for a month's time to prepare for the exams. We have decided to give them two months' time."
The state government will withdraw the cases lied against the protesting students, he added.
He further directed the Universities and Colleges to finish the syllabus before the start of the semester exams and model exams will be conducted before the semester exams from January 20, as reported by TOI.
Earlier, the University of Madras had planned to conduct the semester exams from December 20 and Anna University from December 27.
