BAPSA calls IIT Delhi student' death institutional murder, organizes candlelight vigil seeking justice
Ayush Ashna was a final year Bachelor in Technology programme student at IIT Delhi. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Ayush had appeared for the final exams of BTech this year, the Police said.
A 20-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Delhi, allegedly died by suicide, as informed by police officials. Ayush Ashna was a final year Bachelor in Technology programme student at IIT Delhi. Hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Ayush had appeared for the final exams of BTech this year, the Police said.
Calling it a murder, Birsa Ambedkar Phule Students Association (BAPSA) has asked students to gather around the Main Gate of IIT Delhi at on July 13, 2023, Thursday, at 7 PM. In a tweet posted from BAPSA’s official Twitter handle, the association asked students to gather for a candlelight Vigil demanding Justice and seeking for probe against the Institutional murder of an Adivasi student AYUSH ASHNA in IIT Delhi.
The tweet reads, “Educate! Agitate! Organize! Join the call for Candlelight Vigil by IIT students In demanding Justice and seeking for probe against the Institutional murder of an Adivasi student AYUSH ASHNA in IIT Delhi.”
However, a few other media reports claim that the boy was from a Schedule Caste Family.
Ayush Ashna was found hanging in his hostel room at campus late at night. However, the officials said that the investigating team has not found any note from his room so far. "Ayush's family members have been informed and an investigation is underway to ascertain the exact cause of his death," they said.
The suicide report of the BTech student surfaced a day after a 17-year-old student allegedly died by suicide in Rajasthan's Kota. Officials said that The student from Uttar Pradesh's Rampur had shifted to Kota just two months ago, adding that he was taking coaching classes to crack the tough IIT JEE.
He had been staying at a paying guest accommodation in Kota with a friend. The student allegedly died by suicide while his friend was out of town. Police said they are investigating the case.
