Come Oct 20, MTech final-year students can attend offline classes at IIEST Shibpur
All MTech final-year students at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) Shibpur can visit the campus for offline classes from October 20, 2021.
As per a report published in The Telegraph, in the second and final year of the MTech programme, students need access to laboratories and research facilities. An official of IIEST Shibpur said they carried out a survey about the vaccination status among the 300-odd students and found out that 80 per cent had taken at least one dose. “We hope that all of them will take the second jab before the recall process begins,” he said. The institute has already recalled 189 research scholars. A teacher of the institute said since July last year, when the students had enrolled in the MTech programme, the classes had been held online due of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“If they are not recalled now, they will complete graduation without even visiting the campus. Besides, the MTech programme, which is largely lab-intensive, cannot be covered through online classes alone,” he said.
The students’ senate of IIEST Shibpur in August had shared a list of 142 final year BTech, MTech students with the authorities demanding that they be called back to the campus to attend placement interviews or classes because connectivity problems and frequent power outages at home were coming in the way.
Decision yet to be taken on holding offline classes for BTech students
No decision has been taken yet to recall BTech students, said an IIEST official. Meanwhile, IIT Kharagpur has decided to recall theMTech and MSc students, provided they are fully vaccinated. MTech and MSc students returning to the campus will be divided into groups to avoid crowding. Only those BTech students who are facing resource constraints while attending online classes at home will be allowed on the campus.
NIT Durgapur is also working on a plan to recall final-year students of the MTech programme after Durga puja. IIT Patna has also reopened its campus for students pursuing PhD and doing project work. Only those students who have received at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine will be allowed to attend physical classes on the campus.
