HC judge comes to the rescue of Dalit IIT aspirant
Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh pays admission fee of Sanskriti Ranjan who could not afford a seat at IIT BHU due to financial crisis. She cleared JEE Advanced with 1,469 rank in SC category.
A judge of the Allahabad High Court has volunteered to contribute INR 15,000 to a Dalit girl student who could not get a seat at IIT (BHU) Varanasi for failing to deposit the said fee due to financial crisis.
Sanskriti Ranjan secured 92.77 per cent marks in JEE Main and bagged the 2,062 rank in the Scheduled Caste (SC) category and also cleared JEE Advanced with 1,469 rank in SC category. Following this, she was allotted a seat at IIT (BHU) Varanasi for mathematics and computing [bachelor and master of technology (dual degree)], but she could not arrange INR 15,000 admission fee before the scheduled date due to the ill-health of her father and COVID-19.
She had then appealed to the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court to direct the college to waive her fee. After an order by the single-judge bench of Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh, she has been asked to report to the university within three days.
The judge said, “The petitioner has not been able to pay INR 15,000 for seat acceptance as her father is suffering from chronic kidney disease and has been advised to go for a kidney transplant. The petitioner’s father has to undergo dialysis twice in a week to survive.” Justice Singh directed the Joint Seat Allocation Authority and IIT BHU to admit the student. The court directed IIT BHU to create a supernumerary post if there is no vacant seat in the said discipline.
