On the 20th and 21st of July, students from IIT Bombay joined together to express their concerns and show solidarity with the people of violence-torn Manipur. On the 20th night, on a spontaneous call by some students, who "felt the need of expressing their agony" about the violence against women in Manipur, a number of students gathered in front of School of Management (SOM) building.
From SOM, these students did a candle march to the main building where students spoke with deep anguish towards the horrific violence against women and the seeming crumble down of any governing machinery of the state. Students from Manipur expressed their concern about how sensitive this issue is and the level of toll it is taking on the people back home. At the end of this spontaneous gathering, a call for a solidarity march was given to all students of the institute from the platform of IIT Bombay for Justice.
On 21st July, a number of students gathered in front of SOM building and marched towards the main building. Many spoke up in solidarity with the women of Kuki community as well as the women of Meitei community who are victims of sexual violence.
The students also questions silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the past two months. “Even the Prime Minister broke his absolute silence about this issue only after this video started trending. From the statements of the Chief Minister of Manipur, where he says there are hundreds of FIRs like this have been registered, it is clear that the machinery of state had good knowledge of the violence happening in Manipur, but instead of acting on that, the state chose to hide these incidents from the people in the country,” reads a statement issued by IIT Bombay students.
The students have demanded that the state should take immediate measures to bring peace in Manipur. And take appropriate actions to stop aggravating the violence further. They have also demanded formation of an independent fact finding committee to inform the people of this country about the scale of violence that has happened in the last two and half months.
They also demanded appropriate rehabilitation to the people of Manipur as well as legal justice be provided to all.
