IIT Delhi and Honda Sign MoU to Drive Innovations in Cooperative Intelligence
IIT Delhi and Honda have signed an MoU to advance Honda CI, enabling seamless interaction between machines and people through enhanced understanding of environment, scene, and intent.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL) to enhance Honda's Cooperative Intelligence (CI), an AI system designed to facilitate seamless communication and collaboration between humans and machines by understanding environments, scenes, and intentions. Through this collaboration, Honda and IIT Delhi will jointly work to test and refine driving assistance and automated driving technologies in the suburbs of Delhi.
By leveraging Delhi’s complex traffic conditions for technology validation, both partners aim to further develop CI’s core technologies and eventually apply them to driver assistance and automated driving systems globally, including in India. The MoU was signed by Prof. Preeti Ranjan Panda, Dean of Corporate Relations and Prof. Naresh Bhatnagar, Dean (of R&D), IIT Delhi and Udit Kumar, Senior Vice President & Director, HCIL in the presence of Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi and Takuya Tsumura, President & CEO, Honda Cars India Limited (HCIL).
Joint Research by IIT Delhi and Honda for Cooperative Intelligence
To drive advancements in Cooperative Intelligence (CI), Honda and IIT Delhi have established joint research themes focused on environmental recognition and fostering cooperative behaviour. Together, they will conduct joint R&D, leveraging state-of-the-art AI technologies.
Honda, which has been working on research and development of CI is currently conducting technology demonstrations as a proof of concept of its CI-powered micro-mobility vehicle/robot in Joso City, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan.
Prof. Preeti Ranjan Panda, Dean, Corporate Relations, IIT Delhi, said, “The mobility industry is experiencing significant change, driven by a growing demand for sustainable and functional products powered by AI technologies that are shaping its future. This partnership aims to leverage IIT Delhi's advanced research and Honda’s expertise in practical applications to fast-track innovation and create solutions that benefit both customers and society across a wide range of applications.”
Additionally, for each research theme, Honda associates and IIT Delhi professors will collaborate closely with students to plan, design, develop, and test technologies that extend beyond the laboratory setting. This approach allows for more flexible and open-ended R&D, fostering a deeper exchange of academic and industry insights between Honda and IIT Delhi.

Moreover, IIT Delhi also provide placements support. As per its 2023 placement report, the median package offered to PG (2-year) candidates was INR 12.50 LPA. Q: How long is BTech in IIT Delhi?
The duration of IIT Delhi BTech courses is four years. The full-time degree programme is divided into eight semesters. During the BTech course duration, the students have to do compulsory foundation courses in the areas of basic sciences, humanities, engineering sciences, and social sciences along with the departmental core and elective courses. Moreover, IIT Delhi offers internship opportunities to UG students, the duration of short-term internships is 1.5 to 2 months and is 6 months for long-term internships.
Apart from this, the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi also offer an integrated BTech and MTech programme. The duration of this dual degree course is five years against the standard duration of both the courses - BTech (four years) and MTech (two years).
IIT Delhi boasts a vast pool of outstanding researchers and engineers. Under the MoU, engineers from both HCIL and Honda R&D Co., Ltd., Honda's R&D subsidiary, will collaborate with IIT Delhi researchers on joint projects aimed at advancing Cooperative Intelligence (CI) technologies. This research will focus on future applications, including reducing traffic collisions and enabling automated driving.
