An Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi's Department of Materials Science and Engineering (DMSE) professor has taken a step in transforming technical education by blending technical papers with various art forms. The newly launched initiative, merging art, technology, and soft skills, represents the culmination of a string of experiments designed to rejuvenate the traditionally research-centric realm of materials engineering.

Professor Lakshmi Narayan, from DMSE, organized an experiment where he divided his third-year undergraduate students into six teams, each comprised of six individuals. The task assigned to each team was to creatively interpret and explain a technical paper from Acta Materialia using various creative genres such as plays, memes, music, interpretative dance shows etc.

The students' presentations were marked on a scale of 20 and constituted a segment of their curriculum assessment. These scores were incorporated into the overall grades for the course 'Mechanical Behavior of Materials'.

The collaborative efforts of the faculty within the Institute's Department of Materials Science and Engineering showcase a multifaceted approach to technical education. They defy conventional norms, fostering a culture steeped in inquiry, innovation, and critical thinking.

R Lakshmiarayan said β€œThis unlocks a creative mindset more easily than routine training. I was amazed to see that each team produced a technically brilliant performance and developed songs as well. The added advantage of this is that these performances cannot be plagiarized or generated by chatGPT.”
