IIT Delhi Marks 55th Convocation with 2656 Graduates Receiving Degrees and Diplomas

IIT Delhi hosted its 55th convocation conferring degrees and diplomas upon 2,656 graduating students. Hari S. Bhartia, Founder and Co-Chairman of Jubilant Bhartia Group and a distinguished alumnus from the 1979 batch (B.Tech. Chemical Engineering), served as the Chief Guest, delivering the convocation address. Harish Salve, Chairperson of the Board of Governors at IIT Delhi, presented the Distinguished Alumni Awards and Institute Medals to the honorees and top graduates.
Among the total graduates at IIT Delhi, 25% were women. The Institute conferred degrees on 481 PhD graduates, a 35% increase from the previous year and a record high underscoring its strong focus on research. Notably, 42% of this year's PhD graduates were women.

IIT Delhi Convocation 2024: Gold Medal
At the IIT Delhi convocation, Manas Choudhary, a B.Tech. graduate in Engineering Physics, received the President’s Gold Medal. Divyansh Agarwal, a B.Tech. graduate in Electrical Engineering, was awarded the Director’s Gold Medal. The Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma (former President of India) Gold Medal went to Anjali Kumari, an M.Tech. graduate in Instrument Technology. New Undergraduate and Postgraduate Programs Celebrate First Graduates
This year also marks our first graduates in two UG programs, i.e., B.Tech. in Materials Engineering and B.Tech. in Engineering & Computational Mechanics, and four PG programs, i.e., M.Tech. in Machine Intelligence & Data Science, M.Tech. in Biomolecular & Bioprocess Engineering, M.S.(R) in Transportation Safety and Injury Prevention, and M.S.(R) in Automotive Research and Tribology.
International Students at IIT Delhi Convocation 2024
At the 2024 convocation, 28 international students received their degrees, including 23 M. Tech., 4 PhD, and 1 MS Research. Among them, four students hail from Sudan and Ethiopia, three from Tanzania and Uganda, two from Bangladesh and Burkina Faso, with one student each from the USA, Venezuela, and several other countries.
While delivering the Convocation address, Chief Guest, Hari S. Bhartia, Founder and Co-Chairman, Jubilant Bhartia Group, said, “Entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem in India has evolved from being a nascent and limited to becoming one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing in the world. I encourage you to embrace entrepreneurship spirit, mind set of innovation. The world requires individuals who can connect all the dots through creative thinking and decisive action”.
Q: Is IIT Delhi good for an MBA?
The Department of Management Studies (DMS), IIT Delhi, also known as DMS IIT Delhi offers a two-year MBA course at undergraduate courses in a full-time mode. IIT Delhi is a decent option to pursue an MBA degree. IIT Delhi ranked 4 by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in the Management category IN 2024. Talking about DMS IIT Delhi MBA placements 2023, the average package offered was INR 25.82 LPA and the highest package stood at INR 41.13 LPA. A placement percentage of 100% was achieved. Thus, it is a good institute for an MBA.
Q: Is BTech available in IIT Delhi?
Yes, IIT Delhi offers a four-year full-time BTech course at the undergraduate level. IIT Delhi BTech admission is completely entrance-based. IIT Delhi BTech admission is based on JEE Advanced score obtained by JEE Main-qualified candidates. The centralised counselling process for all the IITs is managed and regulated by the JoSAA, based on which seat allotment is carried out for all the JEE Advanced-qualified candidates. Q: Is it worth doing MSc from IIT Delhi?
Yes, IIT Delhi is a good institute for MSc aspirants. The institute has got a good overall rank from NIRF in the 2023 rankings. It has been ranked at the third spot among top colleges in the country. Moreover, IIT Delhi also provide placements support. As per its 2023 placement report, the median package offered to PG (2-year) candidates was INR 12.50 LPA. Some of the top companies that participate in its placements drive are Microsoft, Cisco, Accenture, etc.
Q: Is PhD available in IIT Delhi?
Yes, Indian Institute of Technology Delhi offers PhD in full-time and part-time modes. The doctoral-level course is made available by almost all the departments of the institute. Candidates who meet the required eligibility criteria and have the relevant work experience become eligible for admission. Currently, IIT Delhi Biochemical Engineering and Biotechnology department is offering joint PhD programme with the University of Queensland.
Addressing the graduating students, Harish Salve, Chairperson, BoG, IIT Delhi, said, “Being here today with those who will shape not just the future of one-fourth of mankind, which lives in our part of the world, just three percent of land but one-fourth of mankind, but you will be shaping in some way or other the future of mankind itself. You're bringing your intellectual prowess to this world. And if the institute can list so many firsts, remember that it is you and your forebears who have given it this intellectual power. You are one of those unusual people who give as you receive."
Addressing the graduating students, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, Director, IIT Delhi, said, “As you step out of your comfort zone of the hostels, of the campus, and go out into the real world - the real world has a lot of challenges than opportunities. Please take up all that you have learned, all the skills, techniques and knowledge, approaches, and use them to resolve problems that you face. Approach every new situation with humility and a willingness to learn. Learn to work in teams. Creating a sustainable and humane society needs graduates to think about the long term consequences and impacts of different technology solutions. There are tradeoffs and value judgements to be made. I am certain that you will stir the ethical and right path and provide leadership in your chosen field.”
