IIT Delhi student ‘commits’ suicide in hostel
IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao said the student was found by his hostel mates and taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS), New Delhi, where he was declared brought dead.
A fourth-year student of engineering physics at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, Samarpit Sahu, allegedly committed suicide at the institute’s hostel on Tuesday. Informing students via mail, IIT Delhi Director V Ramgopal Rao said “it pains us to inform you that he took his own life”.
The IIT Delhi Director said the student was found by his hostel mates and rushed to the All India Institute Of Medical Sciences, (AIIMS), New Delhi, where he was declared brought dead. He further said that they did not know much about the incident at that moment and would inform everyone once they got to know more details.
IIT Delhi has lost several students in the past few years. In June this year, Hari Prasath, a mechanical engineering student of IIT Delhi, allegedly ended his life on the campus. He was suffering from depression and was undergoing treatment on the campus.
Following his death, a section of students from the institute also demanded an inquiry by an institute-level panel. They cited language barrier and cultural isolation to be one of the reasons for the incident.
In November 2019, an 18-year-old student of IIT Delhi died after falling from the fifth floor of her hostel building on the campus, The mother of the deceased had told the police that her daughter was under stress due to her studies. In June 2018, an alumnus of IIT delhi allegedly killed himself by jumping off the seventh floor of a building on the campus. His family members had said the 31-year-old Anshum Gupta was undergoing treatment for depression.
