IIT Guwahati and Armed Forces Partner for Innovative Drone Technology Program

IIT Guwahati has launched a three-month training program focusing on Drone Technology, initially designed for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), with plans to expand its reach to Other Ranks Officers (OR). Check details here 

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has started a three-month training programme on Drone Technology for Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs) and Other Ranks Officers (OR). The program aims to revamp the operational methods of the armed forces and equip them with cutting-edge drone operation skills and tools. This will ease their shift towards post-retirement careers in the swiftly growing drone technology industry. 

The current batch of the Drone Technology Program has 30 personnel from various armed forces. The program has been crafted to combine fundamental and practical aspects of drone technology and operations that would include theoretical, classroom sessions and practical handling. The theoretical part focuses on the fundamentals of Maths and Computing Foundation, Drone Technology, Fundamentals of Electrical, Electronics & Mechanical Engineering, and Applied Engineering. 

The practical aspect prioritizes hands-on training through Flight Simulator usage, Basic Assembly, Risk Assessment and analysis, Drone Equipment Maintenance, Payload Installation and Usage, and Introduction to Drone Data and analysis. Additionally, Robotics, 3D Printing, Practical Flying with an Instructor, and Independent Flying constitute integral components of this distinctive program.

Prof. T. V. Bharat, Head, Centre for Educational Technology, IIT Guwahati, said, “IIT Guwahati, is offering a certificate program on Drone Technology-related course to the defence forces for the first time in the country to skill the armed forces with this upcoming technology and to boost their career opportunities post retirement for senior officers. The current training program by faculty from different departments and centers with wide experience would provide numerous opportunities as entrepreneurs or any other technology based second career to our defence forces.“
