IIT Guwahati Introduces Major Reforms After Student Suicides

IIT Guwahati Policy Changes: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has decided to take action after three student suicides this year, two occurring within a month, plunged the campus into turmoil. In response to student protests, the institute has agreed to revise its policies and introduce greater “flexibility” in academic procedures. Additionally, IIT Guwahati has announced new measures, including supporting mental health counselling services and increasing the number of counsellors available on campus.

Important policy changes at IIT Guwahati include a new attendance system and more flexible scheduling for supplementary exams. Another change will be the implementation of online registration for each semester, which will apply to both new and continuing students.

Involving Student Representative in Shaping New Academic Policies

IIT Guwahati will involve student body representatives in discussions and finalisation of the proposed changes, with the formal process set to begin after mid-semester exams conclude on September 22, 2024. Academic reforms can only be implemented through the Senate, the highest decision-making authority for academic matters at an IIT. Student representatives will be part of this process as well.

Existing Policies at IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati has a mandatory 75% attendance across all courses, with non-compliance resulting in students being barred from taking final exams. This causes students to retake the course in the following semester, even if they have performed well academically, hindering their progress.

Additionally, the restriction of supplementary exams to a fixed period in July, when many students are either finishing or still engaged in summer internships, needs to be relaxed. More flexible scheduling would provide students with adequate opportunities to complete the exams, noted a student leader on campus.

This followed the earlier death of Saumya, a 23-year-old MTech student from UP, who was discovered in her hostel room on August 9. Earlier in April, a 20-year-old BTech student was also found dead in his hostel room in what is suspected to be a suicide.
