IIT Guwahati's ‘LEAP’ Framework

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati have achieved a breakthrough in Electronic Design Automation (EDA) by developing an innovative machine learning (ML) framework called ‘LEAP’. This state-of-the-art solution significantly improves the design process of Integrated Circuits (ICs), a vital component in the $600 billion semiconductor industry that drives today’s electronic devices.

LEAP optimises the design process by estimating delays for various configurations and narrowing down the choices to the top ten for each node, in contrast to the traditional method that typically evaluates around 250 configurations. This focused approach streamlines the workflow and significantly boosts overall efficiency. Their LEAP framework streamlines the technology mapping process within EDA. Rather than evaluating thousands of potential configurations, LEAP intelligently identifies and prioritizes the most promising options, reducing the number of configurations the mapping tool must consider by over 50%.

To address these challenges, Prof. Chandan Karfa, Associate Professor and Dr. Sukanta Bhattacharjee, Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, IIT Guwahati along with their BTech students Chandrabhushan Reddy Chigarapally, Harshwardhan Nitin Bhakkad, have leveraged machine learning to improve efficiency in IC design. The other collaborator is Dr. Animesh Basak Chowdhury of New York University USA.

Regarding the research, Prof. Chandan Karfa said, "Our framework not only speeds up the mapping process but also improves the performance of the circuits. We have reduced the runtime of the EDA tool by 50% and achieved a 2% reduction in clock period without increasing the area required for the circuits, making our solution a significant advancement in electronic design automation."

This research has significant real-world implications for the semiconductor industry, which is crucial for developing electronic devices like smartphones and computers. By optimizing the design process for ICs through the LEAP framework, researchers can reduce design time and enhance performance. This leads to faster, more efficient electronic devices with lower energy consumption, benefiting consumers and driving innovation across multiple technology sectors.

Q:   Is IIT Guwahati good for BTech?

A:

NIRF ranked IIT Guwahati 7 under the “Engineering” category in 2023. According to media reports, a total of 712 students were placed till Dec 6 during IIT Guwahati placements 2024. Further, the highest international and domestic package offered during IIT Guwahati placements 2024 stood at INR 2.05 Crore per annum and INR 1.20 Crore per annum, respectively.

Q:   When was the JoSAA 2024 counselling started?

A:

The JoSAA 2024 registration process started on June 10, 2024. There will be five rounds of JoSAA counselling. JoSAA released Rounds 1 and 2 seat allocation results and cutoffs. Knowledge of JoSAA dates 2024 helps candidates keep a check on the major deadlines, like the last date of registration. It is best to regularly check the official JoSAA website for the latest updates and announcements regarding the 2024 counselling schedule. Additionally, the candidates must keep visiting this space for the latest updates related to JoSAA counselling.

Q:   Why are IITs popular in India?

A:

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is a group of Engineering and Technology institutions in India. This network of institutes came into existence in 1950. These institutes run under the guidance of the Ministry of Education and Government of India. There are currently 23 IITs in India across different states of the country. IITs have a reputation that is recognised in India and across the globe.

Over the years, the students graduating from these institutes have grabbed good placement offers from the top industry giants. Some of the key reasons of why one should choose an IIT:

Q:   Why should students consult UCEED syllabus?

A:
The syllabus of UCEED is meant to help the candidate identify which topics are important and which topics arent. Also, questions in the exam will be asked from the topics mentioned in the syllabus. Note that UCEED syllabus has been revised, and will be effective from 2024 onward. So, instead of wandering aimlessly, with the syllabus in hand, the candidate will be able to know which direction they need to move. To prepare for the exam, the candidate must also consult the exam pattern, which has details like the weightage carried by various sections, marking scheme, test duration, types of questions asked, etc.

In extensive testing on 21 different designs, the LEAP framework demonstrated a 50% improvement in runtime while reducing the number of configurations checked by over 51%. Compared to exhaustive mapping methods, LEAP achieves similar performance results while using 63% fewer configurations, significantly improving the runtime of the open-source ABC EDA tool.
