IIT Hyderabad: PG student commits suicide

A student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Hyderabad has died by suicide allegedly due to mental stress. Mamitha Nayak, 22, an Odisha native, allegedly died by suicide in her hostel room on the institute's campus in Sangareddy district of Telangana, police said on Tuesday.

She had joined the course on July 26, and was found hanging from the ceiling fan in the hostel room on Monday night by some of her classmates.

After she did not come for lunch and dinner on Monday, some worried classmates went to the room and found her hanging said a police official of Sangareddy Rural police station.

Police have reportedly found a suicide letter in her room in which she wrote that no one was responsible for her suicide. She wrote that she was taking extreme step due to mental stress. The deceased student also mentioned "some financial problem in the family".

Sangareddy (rural) sub-inspector of police M Rajesh Naik said, “we recovered a suicide note from her room in which the student scribbled a two-line statement in Odia, saying that nobody was responsible for her death and that she was under severe mental pressure,” as reported by Hindustan Times.

“We have sent the body to the Sangareddy government hospital for postmortem and informed her parents. They were on their way to Hyderabad,” he added.

She is the second IIT-H student to have died by suicide in the last three weeks, and the fourth over the last year.
