IIT Kanpur Faces Yet Another Suicide, MTech Student's Death Raises Concerns

IIT Kanpur faced distress once again as another student took their own life within a month. An MTech student was discovered deceased in his hostel room. The precise reason for this drastic decision is still awaiting confirmation. Check details here 

IIT Kanpur Suicide: The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur experienced another student suicide within a month, causing concern. An MTech student specializing in Aerospace Engineering at the institution, was reported to have been found dead. Students residing in the hostel reported the incident after discovering the body hanging from a ceiling fan. They transported him to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him dead. 

While the cause of his suicide remains uncertain, the institute stated, "A forensic team has examined the situation. The institute is awaiting additional investigation by the police to ascertain the probable cause of death."

In an official statement, IIT Kanpur expressed deep sorrow over the premature passing of a promising academician. The Vikas Kumar Meena joined the MTech program in 2021. He was in second year of MTech in Aerospace Engineering. As per the New Indian Express reports, it is speculated that Vikas was under duress as he had to clear a few papers, and this prompted him to take the extreme step.  

Another Loss in Just 21 Days at IIT Kanpur 

Earlier, as per reports from PTI, on December 19, a research scholar, aged 34, from the same institution took her own life by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her second-floor hostel room. Pallavi Chilka, originally from Cuttack, Odisha, was in postdoctoral research at the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering. As reported by PTI, an initial investigation indicated that depression might have been the cause of her suicide.

An 'X' handle, with the username @VoiceofIITD shares in their post, "Now it's very regular that IITs r becoming graveyards for the students. It's very sad to hear that one of the students named Vikas Kumar Meena of IIT Kanpur frm Mtech in Aerospace Eng. of 21 batch taken his own life yesterday in hostel. Exact reason are still unknown. @IITKanpur"
