IIT Madras Admissions: Introduces Sports Quota for UG Programs
IIT Madras will allocate two additional seats per undergraduate program, with one exclusively reserved for female students.
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has become the first among the prestigious IITs to usher in a Sports Quota for undergraduate admissions. The newly introduced 'Sports Excellence Admission' (SEA) initiative, set to commence from the academic year 2024-2025, aims to recognize and reward exceptional sportspersons by allocating two supernumerary seats in each undergraduate program, with a dedicated focus on encouraging female athletes.
Under SEA, aspiring students need to qualify the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) [JEE Advanced] and will undergo a distinct admission process via a separate portal operated by IIT Madras (https://jeeadv.iitm.ac.in/sea/), diverging from the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) portal.
Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT Madras, expressed enthusiasm for this progressive step, aligning with the vision outlined in the National Education Policy 2020. He emphasized the significance of acknowledging achievements in sports and providing students an opportunity to explore their respective sports from an engineering and technology perspective. Prof. Kamakoti also unveiled plans for a state-of-the-art Sports Complex in the near future.
"In addition, we will also be launching a Sports Complex with advanced equipment in the near future. We are extremely happy that the ‘Sports Excellence Admission’ is happening, starting July 2024. We wish that our alumnus will become world-renowned sportspersons," said Prof. V. Kamakoti.
Key Highlights of SEA Admission Criteria:
-
Two Supernumerary Seats: IIT Madras will allocate two additional seats per undergraduate program, with one exclusively reserved for female students.
-
Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must secure a position in the Common Rank List (CRL) or category-wise rank list in JEE (Advanced) and must have won at least one medal in any National/International-level sports competition in the last four years.
-
Sports Rank List (SRL): A separate 'Sports Rank List' will be prepared based on the total score obtained by candidates in a specific list of sports, determining seat allotment.
This groundbreaking initiative is anticipated to bridge the gap between academic pursuits and sports excellence, fostering holistic development among students. IIT Madras aims to nurture a generation of well-rounded individuals who can contribute not only to academic advancements but also make a mark in the field of sports on a national and international scale.
