IIT Madras Gears Up for Saarang 2025; Cultural Extravaganza from Jan 9 to 13

The IIT Madras Saarang 2025 Cultural Fest will be held from January 9 to 13, 2025, featuring the theme ‘Frames and Fables,’ which celebrates the art of storytelling and the enchantment of visual narration.

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is set to host the 51st edition of Saarang from January 9 to 13, 2025. With an anticipated attendance of 80,000, Saarang 2025 promises to showcase the rich and diverse cultural tapestry of South India. Centered around the theme ‘Frames and Fables,’ the festival will celebrate the art of storytelling and the enchanting world of visual narration.

Saarang takes pride in offering something for everyone, catering to a wide range of interests and tastes. From the adrenaline-pumping FMX show and thrilling amusement rides to the lively Flea Market highlighting small businesses, and the high-energy Indie and Hip-Hop Fest that guarantees a groove-worthy time, Saarang creates a vibrant mosaic of experiences. Each event embodies the festival's spirit of diversity, ensuring an exciting and unforgettable experience for every visitor.

Addressing a Press Conference on the campus, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “Saarang is unique among events on campus. It provides an opportunity for students to bring out their vibrant energy and creativity along with innovative thinking and management skills. Events like these are not just a showcase of artistic brilliance but also a testament to the diversity of the campus. I commend all students involved in organizing this massive event, participants from all across India, and the sponsors and supporters who are contributing to make this event a grand success.”

This edition of Saarang introduces a range of exciting new events and initiatives, including:

• Saarang's Non-Competitive Cluster, dedicated to showcasing marginalized art forms and independent artists, highlighted by Nova’s groundbreaking Hip-Hop and Indie Fest.
• The Multicultural Folk Parade, a celebration of diverse cultural traditions.
• The Empower Social Campaign, designed to inspire change and raise awareness on social issues.

Saarang provides a distinctive platform for emerging artists and performers across a wide range of art forms, including freestyle dance, photography, acapella, graphic design, and stand-up comedy. Over the five-day festival, the Institute’s cultural clubs will host an exciting lineup of events, spanning oratory, comedy, fine arts, writing, and the newly introduced culinary arts club. The festivities will feature competitions, workshops, and outstanding performances from talented individuals and groups from around the world.

Speaking about Saarang, Prof. Sathyanarayana N Gummadi, Dean (Students), IIT Madras, “Saarang is an event we all wait for as it brings music and life to the institute at the start of the year. This year however is extra special because we have Tamil Nadu folk parade for the first time in the history of Saarang from Vana Vani school in campus to Open Air Theatre. In order to inculcate patriotism among young people, this year we show Moovarnam (tricolour) dance performance by school children on freedom fighters in the presence of our Honourable Governor Shri. R.N. Ravi and Isaignani Ilayaraja. In addition, we are also conducting workshops on Tamil folk arts to students and outsiders to promote Tamil Nadu culture and arts."
