Following the suicide case of IIT Madras Scholar Sachin Kumar Jain, ChintaBar, an independent student body recognised by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras in its latest tweet said, “It has been seven days since the suicide of Sachin Kumar Jain, who was a PhD scholar in the Mechanical Engineering department happened. According to the news reports that came later, an internal inquiry committee constituted by the institute is investigating the case.”
Demanding justice for Sachin Kumar, it further said, “On 6th April, Sachin's brother Bhavesh Kumar had sent a written complaint to the director demanding an investigation against the people responsible for Sachin's death. As per the complaint, there were several instances where the guide's behavior led to mental pressure for Sachin.”
“One of which is when he had gone to IIT Roorkee for a conference, he was called back from there without attending the conference stating that he went 2 days earlier than he had informed the guide. The guide blew this issue out of proportion, which led to severe mental pressure on Sachin. Sachin's guide was treating him in a very inhumane manner though he was well aware that Sachin was going through mental health issues. The complaint further says that Sachin had a meeting with his guide on 31st morning, after which he went to his room and put a status in WhatsApp which says " I am sorry, not good enough" . Later in the afternoon, he was found dead,” the statement added.
Stating that the investigation should be addressed by the allegations made by Sachin’s brother, ChintaBar said, “In regard to the complaint, ChintaBar feels that the ongoing internal investigation should address all the allegations that Sachin's brother had raised. We demand the institute administration to take this complaint in a serious manner and to conduct the investigation in an unbiased manner.”
The family of Sachin Kumar Jain alleging harassment from faculties has demanded action against the people responsible for driving him to commit suicide. The family has written a complaint to the Director of IIT Madras demanding action.
