IIT Madras Signs MoU with Hyundai Motor India to Establish ‘Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub’

During the Tamil Nadu Global Investors Meet 2024, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed among the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras), Hyundai Motor India Limited, and Guidance Tamil Nadu. This collaboration is aimed at establishing a 'Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub'. The primary objective of this initiative is to foster the development of a sustainable green hydrogen ecosystem in the country.
IIT Madras will take up the responsibility of establishing the Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub at its campus, providing the necessary land, building infrastructure, and R&D facilities. The institute will additionally design a curriculum and knowledge framework for skill development and will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the Hydrogen Valley.
Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub
The proposed Hydrogen Valley Innovation Cluster in Tamil Nadu (HVIC-TN) is an entity comprising stakeholders from more than 20 companies working in the hydrogen sector besides investors, consulates, IIT Madras, IIT Madras Research Park, Guidance Tamil Nadu, and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation.
The HVIC-TN aims to support India's green hydrogen goals through technological solutions, R&D support, skill development, infrastructure building, and policy recommendations. It serves as a platform for stakeholders to network, fostering faster adoption and transition to green hydrogen.
Speaking about this project, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, “This funding from Hyundai has come at an extremely appropriate time and certainly shall help in the rapid growth of this Consortium. I am sure in the years to come; this Consortium will provide feasible solutions towards substitution of non-fossil fuels by green hydrogen.” The Hydrogen Valley Innovation Hub project, with a total project cost amounting to Rs. 180 Crores, will be established through an investment of Rs. 100 Crores by Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) to meet its capital expenditure (capex) requirements.
