JEE Advanced 2025 Eligibility: Who Can Take the Exam for the Third Time?
The Supreme Court gave its final verdict on January 10 regarding the JEE Advanced 2025 third attempt. Know if you are eligible to attempt the exam this year and have a chance to be admitted to one of the IITs.
The JEE Advanced 2025 eligibility criteria include an exception this year for certain candidates. Normally, there are two attempts for JEE Advanced, meaning candidates who appeared for the exam in 2024 are eligible to apply for JEE Advanced 2025. However, students who took the exam in 2023 are not typically allowed to appear this year. That said, following a Supreme Court ruling on January 10, candidates who appeared for JEE Advanced in 2023 but dropped out of their course between November 5 and 18, 2024, will now be eligible to apply for JEE Advanced 2025.
The Supreme Court ruled that:
- The Joint Admission Board (JAB) made a clear commitment in a press release on November 5, 2024, assuring that students who had completed their Class 12 exams in 2023, 2024, or 2025 would be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025. Relying on this assurance, some students chose to leave their current courses to focus on preparing for the exam.
- However, when the JAB altered its decision on November 18, 2024, reducing the number of attempts, these students found themselves in a difficult position.
- The Court refrained from commenting on JAB's decision to reverse its decision from three to two attempts at JEE Advanced 2025.
- But at the same time it ruled that since some students acted based on the initial three attempt promise from JAB, they should not be penalised for it. As a result, students who withdrew from their courses between November 5 and November 18, 2024, will still be eligible to register for JEE Advanced 2025.
Therefore those candidates who took the JEE Advanced 2023 exam but left their courses between November 5 and November 18, 2024, will be eligible for JEE Advanced 2025, even if it is their third attempt. All other candidates will get two attempts at the JEE Advanced exam.
Any official notice by the Joint Admission Board (JAB) after the SC ruling is yet to be released.
