Students at these NIT engineering colleges have bagged more offers and higher pay packages in the placement season as compared with the previous years.

The slowdown in the economy has had no impact on the demand for top engineering talent. This can be seen from the ongoing final placement season at the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) where students have bagged more offers and higher pay packages this year as compared to last year.

Automobile and consumer goods companies stayed away from recruitment this year due to a slowdown in the sector. However, their absence has been more than offset by services and technology firms, said placement officials at NITs.

The average salary offered at NITs including Surat, Warangal and Calicut are 30 per cent more than last year. For placements at NIT Jalandhar, the offers are up by nearly 54 per cent. The final placement season at NITs begins before that of the Indian Institutes of Technology, which is set to begin in December. Pre-placement offers (PPOs) at IITs for the class of 2020 have beaten the last year’s numbers by 19-24 per cent. Microsoft has been one of the top campus recruiters, especially at IITs and NITs, is hiring in big numbers this year too.

Commenting on the placement season at NITs this year, S Ghosh, the placement professor-in-charge at NIT-Jalandhar said, “The companies are paying better and have taken more students than the previous years.” Microsoft has made the highest offer of Rs 39.02 lakh per annum on this campus this year so far. The average salary has gone up to Rs 11.63 lakh.

Much of the demand is for profiles in business analytics, coding, and software development. Fewer companies from the automobile and FMCG sectors have visited the campus this year due to economic slump. Regular recruiters from NITs, like Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, and Ashok Leyland have not yet visited these campuses, while others like Mahindra & Mahindra have yet to confirm their dates for the visits.

Amazon and Salesforce were the top recruiters at MNIT-Jaipur this season. Other companies that visited for recruitment for the first time were Tredence, QuadEye Security, Lowe’s, Wissen, Nokia, Incture, PharmEasy, ATCS, Toshiba, Cartesian Consulting, and IBM.

Till date, students who sat for placements at NIT-Calicut (Kozhikode) received 460 offers as compared with 384 at this time last year. Cisco, Amazon, Arcesium, SAP, Qualcomm, Oracle, and AppDynamics were among the top recruiters. The top offer made was Rs 50 lakh a year which is the same as last year.

At NIT-Warangal, the highest pay package offered was Rs 43.33 lakh and the average salary was Rs 12.87 lakh. There has been a little impact on placements this year due to economic slowdown.  As many as 440 students had got an offer by this time last year at NIT-Surat, but that number has come down to 327 this year.
