The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur announces Prof. Rintu Banerjee as its new Deputy Director. Prof. Banerjee achieves a significant milestone as the first woman to hold this position at India's pioneering IIT and globally. She is the Founder Head and currently serves as the Chairperson of the P K Sinha Centre for Bioenergy and Renewables.
She has previously led as the Head of the Centre for Rural Development, Innovative and Sustainable Technology, and as the Head of the Department of Agricultural & Food Engineering at IIT Kharagpur for 3 years. Throughout her career, she has held various significant roles, such as Chairperson of the Centre of Excellence in Precision Agriculture & Food Nutrition, Nodal Coordinator for Australia and New Zealand for SPARC, and Coordinator for RuTAG.
Educational Background of Prof. Rintu Banerjee
Prof. Banerjee completed her PhD in Microbial Biotechnology from the Chemical Engineering Department at IIT Kharagpur. Throughout her career, she has been actively involved in collaborative research between academia and industry. Her research efforts have resulted in the transfer of multiple technologies to various industries, and she holds numerous national and international patents.
Books Published by Prof. Rintu Banerjee
She has published two books in the area of environmental biotechnology and OMICS-Based Approaches in Plant Biotechnology. Besides that, she has handled several government/private/industry-sponsored projects that include TBT, DST, ICAR, UAI, ICMR, IMPRINT, SPARC, SERB and many other multinational industries. She has visited several countries as a Visiting Professor and for various scientific collaborations including Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Finland, Egypt, Australia, the US, Taiwan, Japan, the UK, South Korea, Laos, Thailand, Dubai, Doha, Brazil, Canada, Malaysia to name a few.

Prof. Banerjee has been honoured with several prestigious awards, including the Panjabrao Deshmukh Award for Outstanding Women Scientist from ICAR, the Best Woman Bioscientist Award from the Biotech Research Society of India, the Young Scientist Award '94 from the Association for Food Scientists and Technologists (India), the Dr. Prem Dureja Endowment, the Institute Chair Professorship from IIT Kharagpur, the Louis Pasteur Award, the Madan Mohan Malviya Award, and the Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award. Additionally, she was recognised as the Most Inspiring Women Engineer/Scientist of 2014 by Engineering Watch, New Delhi, for her exemplary contributions to Science & Technology.
