Student found hanging in hostel room at IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati referred to the deceased, identified as Gudla Mahesh Sai Raj as a “young man” and a “former student” of the institute.

A 20-year-old student from Andhra Pradesh was found hanging in his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati. The police said the deceased, identified as Gudla Mahesh Sai Raj, allegedly committed suicide due to mental pressure. He was a fifth-semester BTech computer science and engineering student.  

A police official said investigations are on to know the exact cause of death. The body will be handed to the family after the post-mortem examination. Meanwhile, the institute released a statement which said the body of a young man was found in one of the hostel buildings and has been “identified as a former student of the institute”. 

Student terminated due to “poor academic performance” 

Sources said the student was terminated from his course due to “poor academic performance”. The institute informed the family after which they reached the campus, the statement said and added that IIT Guwahati expressed its deepest condolences to the family at this time of profound grief. “We will cooperate with the police investigation and also commission an internal investigation on this matter,” the statement added. 

This is a second such case at the institute in the last one month. A 21-year-old BTech student of the institute allegedly committed suicide in his hostel room in September. He was from Kerala. On August 31, Rahul Bingumalla, an MTech student at IIT Hyderabad, allegedly hanged himself to death. He was a native of Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh. The police found a suicide note in his laptop, in which he wrote, he felt that the institute should not force students to complete the thesis. Rahul left a note in the room informing the he wrote a suicide note, which is in his laptop. He also referred to the alleged irregular payment of INR 12,000 stipend in this note.
