Govt plans to turn AIIMS into world-class medical university

The government is planning to redevelop AIIMS into a world-class medical university, as confirmed by Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal.

Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Anil Baijal has chaired a meeting with CEO NITI Aayog, AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria, VC DDA, and other senior officials to discuss the master plan for the redevelopment of AIIMS, New Delhi, into a world-class medical university.

Anil Baijal has tweeted, "Chaired a meeting regarding Master Plan for the redevelopment of AIIMS, New Delhi into a world-class Medical University along with CEO NITI Aayog, VC DDA @official_dda, Dr Randeep Guleria-AIIMS & other senior officials of AIIMS."

"While appreciating the highlights of the Master Plan it was decided to put in place an institutional mechanism to coordinate and facilitate timely grant of NOCs/ clearances required for the project from different Departments and Agencies including DDA, Local Bodies, Forest, Fire etc. It was agreed to meet periodically under the Chairpersonship of Hon'ble LG to review the status of approvals granted and to consider any inter-agency coordination issues that may arise. Conveyed best wishes for successful completion of the project," he said.

In the Union Budget 2022 presented by Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on February 1, the budget for AIIMS has increased to INR 4,190 crore from last year's INR 3,800 crore. A lot is happening around making the health care infrastructure and medical education institutions better to deal with future pandemics and viruses. 

The medical budgets of Jawaharlal Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) and National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro-Sciences (NIMHANS) have also increased in the current budget and also a National Tele Mental Health Programme will be launched for providing mental health counselling to the people of India.
