4 Member panel looking into violence at JNU, Education Minister informs Parliament
Different student groups held a series of events at the Students’ Activity Centre at JNU on the evening of 19 February 2023 where a scuffle broke out.
Ministry of Education informing the Parliament regarding violence at JNU last month in which several students were injured has stated that the Jawaharlal Nehru University has set up a four-member inquiry committee to examine the scuffle among some students on February 19.
While replying to a question on whether any complaints have been made on the attack on Tamil students in Jawaharlal Nehru University by right-wing group students recently, Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has stated that different student groups held a series of events at the Students’ Activity Centre at JNU on the evening of 19 February 2023.
“There was a scuffle among some students which was addressed by immediate administrative intervention and order was restored. In order to maintain the peaceful and harmonious environment in the university campus, various steps including outreach activities have been taken by the administration,” Education Minister informed.
A section of JNU students alleged that they were attacked by ABVP when they tried to hold a meeting in memory of an Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT-B) student, Darshan Solanki, who died by suicide last month.
They claimed that the ABVP members had gathered for the Sivaji event and wrote on walls that communists be hanged, Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid should be hanged.
JNU has nearly 9000 students currently enrolled in various programmes.
