DU Adhoc teachers in the departments (mostly first-generation learners) have not been paid salaries, for the last two and half months.

Some of the Delhi University faculty members have sent a letter to the vice-chancellor urging him to release the pending salaries of ad-hoc teachers. The teachers have alleged that for more than two and half months ad-hoc teachers have not received their salaries.

University of Delhi (DU) has over 4200 ad-hoc teachers working at its departments and constituent colleges. As per the letter sent to Prof Yogesh Singh, Vice-Chancellor of DU Adhoc teachers in the departments (mostly first-generation learners) have not been paid salaries, for the last two and half months.

The letter reads: β€œThis is to bring to your notice that the ad-hoc teachers in the departments (mostly first-generation learners) have not been paid salaries for the last two and half months. It is very difficult to survive in a metro city like Delhi without a salary. They have been appointed after due approvals in place.”

The letter also states that there is a delay in their extension as the departments are repeatedly asked to explain the workloads. β€œBut, this is in violation of its own decision of the university & 5th Dec letter of MHRD. Reading the AC resolution and the MHRD letter together, the ad-hoc teachers are to continue till permanent appointments & to be unaffected by workload variations.”

The teachers have stated that the workload can't be a single variable matrix. The student-teacher ratio varies across the departments and is not conducive to quality teaching-learning at the PG level and quality research.

β€œFor instance, a department like Political Science with around 1200 PG students is somehow managing within 12-13 permanent teachers. These students are mixed groups in terms of Hindi and English medium,” the letter sent to VC reads.

The teachers of specialised areas of their academic disciplines are essentially required at the department level. The time devoted to research work, research supervision and numerous academic-administrative responsibilities must be taken into account.

The teachers who are also members of the Executive Council of the university have requested VC to give an extension and release salaries to the Adhoc teachers without any further delay.
