Focus on implementation of NEP 2020, constructing Indo-centric narratives: JNU VC
The newly appointed JNU VC has said that the focus of the University would be in constructing Indo-centric narratives.
The newly appointed Jawaharlal Nehru University Vice-Chancellor has stated that her priority would be the implementation of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 with a focus on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary areas of studies.
Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, the first women VC of JNU has stated that the focus of the University would be in constructing Indo-centric narratives.
On February 7, the Ministry of Education (MoE) appointed Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit, a professor of political science at Savitribai Phule Pune University, as the new VC of JNU. Pandit succeeds M Jagadesh Kumar who recently became chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The new JNU VC has thanked the Prime Minister and Minister of Higher Education for giving her the opportunity to head the University.
Pandit in her statement said: “The immediate focus of this administration would be to provide clean administration, students friendly and gender-sensitive environment for academic excellence.”
“We would strive to implement NEP 2020 and the vision of Prime Minister especially in interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary areas of studies, JNU rising to greater heights of academics and research. The focus would in constructing Indo-centric narratives,” JNU VC statement reads.
It states: “I look forward to working with students, faculty and staff to contribute in achieving these objectives.”
Controversial statements by JNU VC
Following Pandit’s appointment as JNU VC social media was flooded with controversial tweets from an unverified Twitter handle in the name of Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit (@SantishreeD). The handle, had tweets called leftists in India have started supporting religious fanaticism, which was not the case back in the time. The handle also expressed concerns about the way Jihadi "beards" and "hijabs" have come up on the JNU campus. The handle also termed Jamia Millia Islamia and St. Stephen’s College “communal campuses”, also used slurs for Indian Christians and described civil rights activists as “mentally-ill jihadists”, the tweets have been deleted later.
