The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IITD) will be introducing two new courses from this year- MSc Cognitive Science and MSc Economics, under its Humanities and Social Sciences Department. IIT Delhi will be launching the postgraduate programmes in July 2020. The postgraduate courses will be two-year full-time courses, having 25 seats each.
Admission to the MSc Economics programme will be done through an entrance test which will be conducted by the institute, comprising a written test and an interview. For the MSc Cognitive Science course, the admission will be through COGJET (Cognitive Science Joint Entrance Test). The COGJET will be conducted by IIT Kanpur along with the other institutions. The selection will be based on the entrance test followed by an interview.
Purnima Singh, Head of the Humanities and Social Sciences Department was quoted as saying, “We have tough competition as Delhi has some good economics schools like the Delhi School of Economics and Jawaharlal Nehru University, but we have an advantage.” She further said that it is not just the brand of IIT which is an advantage but also very good computer science and mathematics departments and the general ecosystem that IIT Delhi provides. She added that the cognitive science programme is a new programme in India with very few institutions running it and only two of the IITs- IIT Kanpur and IIT Gandhinagar offering the same.
“It is the locational advantage that we have and the IITs are best suited to teach cognitive science. We will have a good number of students opting for it,” said Purnima.
