NEP will be implemented from 2022; Will have 3-4 yr UG Courses: Delhi University VC
Delhi University is planning to introduce various provisions of the new National Education Policy (NEP 2020) from the 2022-23 academic session. The university is planning to reintroduce a four-year undergraduate programme with multiple entry and exit options.
Last week, DU Vice-Chancellor held a meeting with other officials of the university over recommendations submitted by the NEP committee constituted by the university.
The Government of India came up with a new education policy last year which replaces the 35-year-old education policy. Following this Delhi University formed a 42 member NEP implementation committee which included all the stakeholders of the university comprising Delhi University officials, principals of its affiliated colleges, teachers to deliberate on the various provisions of the NEP and suggests recommendations for their implementation.
DU VC, Prof P C Joshi speaking to Shiksha said: “This committee held discussions around various provisions of the NEP and after four months they submitted a report to me and we uploaded it on the website of the university. This was done for everyone to see and share their suggestions.”
He added that as far as implementation of the new National Education Policy is concerned a detailed and open discussion has already taken place.
“Now we are taking it one by one to various statuary bodies as it has already gone through the high power committee. Now, it will be taken to the Statuary Committee first, then it will go to the Academic Council and we have decided to implement the NEP from next session onward,” Joshi said.
Four Year UG Porgramme
As per the recommendations of the Committee, the University should retain the three-year honours degree as well as assimilate in its structure the four-year honours degree, and the four-year honours degree with research.
The structure of UG programmes recommended by the NEP Implementation Committee will now be placed before the standing committee on academic matters and the academic council for consideration and approval.
“It will be implemented from 2022 as we need some time for preparations. At first, we will get it passed by our statuary bodies and then we will have time to adjust, make changes if there are some changes to be made so that by next year we are ready with all the provisions of the NEP which are to be implemented,” DU VC said.
Joshi said that the university is looking at provisions like three or four years of graduation, one and two years of post-graduation, academic bank of credit, multiple entry and exit options.
The NEP Implementation Committee has recommended awarding certificates to students who exit successfully at the end of the first year and students exiting after the second year will get a diploma. These students will also have the option to rejoin the program as per recommendations of the NEP.
