Only 200 Teachers Appointed at Central Universities during ‘Mission Mode’: Education Ministry
Over 6000 posts are lying vacant in CUs, while IITs have over 4500 faculty posts still vacant.
Only 212 faculty members were recruited at central universities during the mission mode period at central universities. There are more than 6000 teaching posts lying vacant at Central Universities (CUs). The majority of the older and large central universities like Delhi University, JNU, and BHU could not appoint a single teacher during this period.
The Indian Institutes of Technology recruited 835 faculty members and have over 4500 posts still vacant.
The Ministry of Education asked all the higher education institutions to fill up vacant posts in mission mode from 5th September 2021 to 4th September 2022. However, the central universities which had over 6200 faculty posts vacant could only recruit 212 teachers for various positions.
Some of the prominent central universities like the University of Delhi, Jamia Millia Islamia, and Jawaharlal Nehru University with hundreds of posts lying vacant for years, could not appoint a single faculty member during this period.
The central universities located in Uttar Pradesh, Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University and the University of Allahabad also could not recruit a single faculty member in mission mode.
At present, there are 6028 posts vacant at CUs of which 2154 are General, 1543 OBC posts, 878 SC, 520 ST, 611 from EWS and 322 PWD. As per information shared by the Ministry, the institutes have prepared separate reservation rosters for each cadre in accordance with Central Educational Institutions (CEI) (Reservation in Teachers' Cadre) Act, 2019 and following the same.
During this period, Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya recruited the highest number which was 78, Pondicherry University filled 23 teaching posts, and the Central University of Rajasthan and Hemwati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University appointed 22 faculty each.
Vacant posts at IITs
The IITs appointed 835 faculty members during the mission mode period announced by the Education Ministry, these premier technical institutions have 4526 posts still lying vacant.
Among older IITs, IIT Kharagpur recruited the highest number 106, IIT Bombay 40 and IIT Delhi 47. During the mission mode period IIT Guwahati was able to recruit 68 faculty members while IIT Kanpur did 69, IIT Madras 29, IIT Roorkee 40 and IIT(BHU) Varanasi 52.
